40K’s Raven Guard Chapter Detailed & New Reiver Kits!
July 17, 2017 by brennon
Games Workshop recently showed off what's coming for the Raven Guard in an article which focuses on the Chapter from Warhammer 40,000. But, it also showed off the new Primaris Reiver kit too!
The Raven Guard are masters of stealth and intrigue, working in the shadows as they strike their enemies from afar and in the back when no one's looking. Their Chapter rule certainly emphasises that.
Shadow Masters is a pretty awesome rule showcasing the Raven Guard being able to avoid their enemies gaze until the opportune moment. Maybe you'll be able to bring into play a lot of Scouts with their sniper rifles and Assault Space Marines which wait in the wings until the right time to strike.
Reivers From The Shadows
Additionally, they also showed off the Primaris replacement for such Scouts with the Reivers.
You can see some of them here shown off skulking around these containers. Here's more on how they work in-game...
"Reivers, on the other hand, are a versatile and powerful unit in a Raven Guard army and function well with other assault units; they’re almost as mobile as jump troops with their grapnel launchers and grav-chutes, with some handy abilities like Terror Troops and shock grenades.
If you want to make your own Raven Guard characters, their unique Warlord Trait, Silent Stalker, prevents enemies from firing Overwatch, while the Raven’s Fury Chapter relic allows a jump pack character to move at blistering speeds and reroll charge ranges – combined, you’ll have a potent and deadly character assassin."
The kit is looking fantastic and shows off some leaner and more deadly looking Primaris Space Marines who are not at all averse to getting up close and personal with the enemy. Hopefully it won't be long until we get a closer look at these models.
What do you think?

Damn… Why now? -.-
Played Raven Guards in my earlie years, now I build me a AdMech Army and want to build some Necrons. And now this… damn you GW…
Very interesting, ever since I read his first HH novel I have loved Corax, he is my favorite Primarch, and the Raven Guard hold a special place in my heart (If only Could paint black well …) This captures the Chapter’s ethos perfectly, Strike disappear , reappear where not expected strike again .. etc.. very Space Ninja .
I like the Reivers, less the pauldrons, and am glad the bell bottoms are gone. I would also change their weapon load-out. Personal preference, as I would use them in Traveller. These look leaner, more like ‘heroic 28’s’, and less like ‘fat 28’s.’ Great new aesthetic.
Depends on the price. I don’t like spending more than about $3.00 per model on bulk troops, or around $10.00 on a character.
the ‘easy build’ reivers are about 10 Euro for 3 models, so that’s about 3$ / model …
It kind of looks like these are the same in that picture …
Thanks @limburger . Good to know! 🙂
Yes the bell bottoms are better gone.
Seems interesting.
Seems pretty powerful. Remains to be seen whether these new Chapter Tactics rules will be game breaking but they seem very good and may make marines a bit overpowered until other factions get a codex. Thankfully GW have said that all factions will get a codex within a year.
If they’re anything like AoS warscrolls, you will need to pay for them, as the General’s Handbook provided the points value for formations and units.
You’d assume that with the play testing they have had going on, stuff won’t be too out of whack when everyone has their codex released (but if so, they’ve got the general handbook for 40k as an opportunity to change things.
It’s interesting seeing these traits and thinking about what may come about for other armies (eg Craftworlds).
So far it’s been a +1 to this or -1 to that. And it’s just the one rule for the entire army, which means you either get the leadership bonus if you are ultrasmurf or this one for conforming to raven guard standards. It does add up though. To counter the raven guard you’d have to either be inside that 12″ range or get yourself a +1 boost to compensate. OTOH … if you’ve got an auto-hit weapon (like that freaky death guard drone has) then you’ve got nothing to worry about at all. It does suck that these fluffy… Read more »
I’m so ready to start a new hobby project in these new dark times of 40K. The core will definitely be mew super clone Space Marines but with a subversive twist. Stylewise old school inspired, gritty, harsh and industrial Imperium themed. Just need to weigh out what exactely they’re going to be: a new band of a 1rst founding chapter (Hands I fancy because of their nomadic background and deranged mutilation rituals), a new ‘regular’ chapter, a re-try on a gene-seed corrupted, renegade or repentive chapter like a Cursed Founding one, Relictors, Astral Claws, Lammenters or so (but which ultimately… Read more »
I am also wondering which chapter to go with for my Primaris from the starter set(s). Looking at some of the Badab War chapters like Mantis Warriors, Howling Griffons or maybe Carcharadons. Alternatively may design my own as that is something I have wanted to do for 20 years but never got round to it.
Right? It’s so weird this new stuff brings you around to something you already wanted to do all that long. That’s inspiration to you I reckon. ^^
Reivers look cool in black.
My first thought on that doctrine rule was it sounds more like an Eldar ability, and then that it seems a bit too powerful for an army wide thing…?
Really wasn’t sold on The Reivers in blue but they do look well in black.
everything looks better in black 😉
would be great in spacehulk.
