40k Shooting Phase Discussed + New Teaser Of Updated Space Marines!
May 1, 2017 by brennon
It looks like we're going to be learning lots more about Warhammer 40,000 over the next few weeks and the latest look ahead from Games Workshop focuses in on the Shooting Phase.
You can shoot all of the weapons in your unit when they activate but not if they have Advanced that turn. Also, if you are within one inch of the enemy you also can't shoot with exception given to Pistols which are able to be drawn quickly by your warriors.
You cannot shoot at units in combat, much like in other editions, but with the way you can pull back now, there is a way to open up chances for covering fire as a unit retreats.
Additionally, Heavy Weapons now don't snap fire when you've moved. Instead, they get a blanket minus one to their score allowing you to get more devastating weapons into position easily.
Cover was also discussed as it now gives you a save only if it would be better than your existing armour save. It is also modified by the penetration value of certain weapons so you might just be able to blast through a ceramite wall to get to the poor defenders behind it.
Some weapons also completely ignore cover so watch out for those!
A New Breed Of Warrior
It's been thought that we're going to be getting some new Space Marines for a while now and as Roboute Guilliman explains in the video above the seal has been opened and more warriors are coming to aid their brothers.
There was a bit of a teaser last month where folks were looking at some large scale Space Marines which seemed to stand a little taller than the existing Battle Brothers out there.
I wonder if the Space Marines who have been fighting for so long in the name of the Emperor are going to be happy with the appearance of these new soldiers; closer in design to that of their Primarchs and the Emperor?
We shall have to wait and see!

I’ll wait to see what the full fluf on the new marines is before making up my mind….
But all that trailer makes me think is that their super duper marines and that idea doesn’t float my boat. Marines are already a group of “captain America” level super soldiers in power armour they don’t need to be more super, leave that to the Custodes and Primarchs.
Interestingly it’s making me think of the kurt Russel film “Soldier” (watch it if you haven’t already)
‘Soldier’ – the sequel to Blade Runner 🙂
I agree we don’t need a higher level of space marines.
Previews keep me cautiously optimistic, it seems that while concepts have been ported from AoS they are doing a lot to address what my issues are with the system and retaining a 40k feel. Also seems to be providing more tactical choices and boosting assault forces with the pistol rules. Cover there seems to be some more depth and different types of cover, will be interesting to see the detail.
The video is a nice touch seems to be a background reason to maybe move to truescale marines. Plus allow for difference in scales.
I’m hoping for a return of the thunder warriors, think it could make some interesting fluff and rediscovering old tech makes more sense to me than the Imperium suddenly discovering something new. Also Thunder warriors are basically marines on PCP and who doesn’t want to see that!
The animated videos are the way forward. Its a great way for GW to communicate whats going on in the universe and talk to fans.
That would be cool but weren’t the Thunder Warriors really unstable at a genetic level? It’s ages since I read any fluff on them but did’t they prematurely age or burn out?
Will the Rainbow Warriors make an appearance? Some of the old WK40k Rogue Trader stuff would make great additions to the game. Slann anyone?
True dat? There is hope.
The last time I played 40k it was heavily skewed towards assault-based armies like Tyranids and Blood Angels (it was one of the reasons I stopped playing as I always felt it should be about the lasers rather than the chainsaws!); interesting to see it went the other way in recent years and I have to admit I’m very intrigued by what I’ve heard of this new edition- if they get the balance right between shooting and assault I’ll be giving this a serious look!
40k: now with twice the amount of marines in every scoop! Honestly I’m intrigued although I’d love to see revitalized imperial guard even more, something between guard and marine (less horde and tank, more well armored and trained but not battle-gods). But that’s just always been my interest when it comes to human armies in general 🙂
With Armageddon taking center stage in the fluff and the new campaign I’d love to see the Steel Legion take over from the Cadians as the core of Guard armies. Some plastic kits wold be awesome. Guard are also an army desperately in need of a re-balance. They limped along with a 6th edition codex.
Steel legion kits would be awesome, I’d like to see a return of proper storm troopers as well not trademarkus scions. Don’t get me wrong, they’re nice models, just not quite the aesthetic I’d go for. And hey, while we’re at it, bring the rough-riders back in plastic! 🙂
Cover giving a positive save modifier is cool. Had originally guessed it would be negative to hit modifiers but this works just as nicely and makes hiding Space Marines behind a wall a sensible option for a change.
And I like the idea that a high powered weapon can negate cover. No more oil drums blocking shots designed to cut through tank armour.
Yeah, having lascannon shots stopped by a hedge really sucks.
I really, reeeally fear they’ll lean heavily towards the aesthetics of AoS, with over-the-top, unimaginatively busy miniatures and toddler-toylike vehicles (like the latest dwarf insanity they’ve conjured up). That’s just not a road I’m going down.
Will this re sizing be a unit specific job or across all minis. After playing the new Dow 3 game I’m tempted to get into 40k with an ork army but don’t want to lay down some notes just to see new sized orks in the near future.
I am surprised how much GW is telling us about upcoming 40k 8th ed. I never expected this much already.
I must admit i’m feeling a little confused right now. But that will pass in matter of 6 weeks or so ( alledgedly, please don’t quote me ) when a release was rumoured. But overall i’m happy this has moved away from the bloated, rule heavy thing it had become, let alone trying to play ” King of the psychic phase “, much like WFB 8th ed and its magic phase dominance.
I’m not sure if the one thing 40k needed is yet another list of space marine dudes.
Then again … with the new Eldar-like faction the pink skins would have to get something new too.
This does make me wonder if the Orkses get a new (sub)faction as well.
Changes to cover save sound good and makes it worth putting marines behind it now even against small arms fire. Changes to the charge phase are up and sound interesting. Shame people on FB are complaining because they didn’t read things properly. For those that haven’t read them yet, rules are you get to overwatch multiple times with the same unit, but as soon as it gets into combat it can no longer overwatch. People on FB have twisted it into, say they want to charge with five units against a single unit, then that unit overwatches against all five,… Read more »
Overwatch can be lethal though. There’s a lot of units and buffs that can fire at full BS. Having a squad shot to pieces and not even make combat is pretty frustrating.
For my part I’m fine with them leaving OW as it is. But the 2D6″ charge is a killer. Move stat + D6″ makes way more sense.
While *can* be lethal, my point was that there are people commenting on the GW FB post as if it will obliterate every unit every time. Not every unit is going to be buffed up the wazoo (and that’s assuming those things will even be in the new edition) and all it takes is for a single mini to make it through and there’s no more overwatch from that unit.
First Space Marines invaded Warhammer with the Sigmarines now they are putting Sigmarines into 40k! Do we call them Stormcast Marines? Space Marine Eternals? Or just stick with Sigmarines for both types?
I’m mostly joking, though it seems a little gimmicky to be making more space mariney Space Marines though. To me it’s not quite as dumb an idea as Centurions but I think they’d have done better if they just gave the Marines a tech upgrade. Maybe a fancy new armor design and some slightly more high tech weapons.
Aye – that was my thought too. Sigmarites in 40k since those figures are a good bit bigger than marines…
I’m excited about Shadow Wars and AOS Skirmish.
These new units though? No.
Neither was I for the primarchs. Flyers etc.
If anything it all just makes me dislike contemporary fluff and makes me disinclined to get back into largescale 40K.
The rules however do seem improved and streamlined. Which I like. A lot!
will each Chapter receive a consignment of mega marines?
wonder if this is part inspired by True Scale conversion projects
I like the idea that Chaos might be playing a bigger part in the new 40k narrative. Back when 40k began there were so few miniature kits that chaos or imperial (elder or ork) were the main army choices. And 30k is all about marines vs marines.
seems optimistic looking.
I can’t be the first person to say this – but – that was an election broadcast!
MAKE THE EMPIRE OF MAN GREAT AGAIN
UNDER A STRONG AND STABLE LEADERSHIP :-O
This starts to look like the 40k I loved a decade ago :
Armor save modifiers and movement value linked to each profile.
I will wait and see.
I’m not sure that 40k need more and bigger marines ^^’
hm several decades ago actually
oohh Papa Smurf is a bit pee’d off
where’s Leman Russ!!!!
This is all leading to a split of the imperium again. Robout and his fancy new marines, with Ultramaries and Mechanicus on one side. The rest of the Imperium on the other. Perhaps a few other chapters join with some IG.
That is how I see the narrative playing out.
