Warhammer TV Warhammer 40,000 Q&A Details Within [Updated]
April 24, 2017 by brennon
Pete Foley, head of the new edition of Warhammer 40,000 and Andy Smilie from the Warhammer Community Team are going to be running a Q&A session (17:15 BST) on the new edition of the game from Games Workshop over on the Warhammer TV Facebook Page.
Right now you can go and post your comments over on the relevant post on the Facebook Page (not here) and then tune in later to find out if they answer your questions.
Update: Q&A Highlights included below...
- Movement values are now back for all forces
- Morale has been tweaked to be more important in the game
- Range Modifiers have returned
- Vehicles no longer have Armour Values and instead all units have the same statistic block
- Everyone can hurt everyone in the game - Strength & Toughness work very differently
- Armies should retain their similar playstyles from previous editions
- Chargers in combat will fight first
- If you play in Matched and Narrative play you adhere to the Battleforged system (Organisation Charts)
- Command Points are generated by following the Battleforged system
- Command Points can be spent to interrupt turns and do special actions. For example, interrupting a units turn to activate instead
- The main rulebook will include Command Point options but each Organisation Chart also reveals more plus there will be more in individual codices
- Templates are going away entirely
- You can only use one Command Point per turn so it can't be abused
- New Edition has been heavily playtested by veterans at AdeptiCon and Nova as well as in-house
- Five books available at launch that will give you all of the rules you need to play the game - no army will be left out
- You will only need one book to play, no need to have loads of books anymore
- Codices going forward will present more theme and narrative
- Cities of Death and other themed books are part of their ideas going forward
- Digital Rules and Printed Rules will be available for you to get
- Core Rules will be available to all in some format or another
- Trying to tick all of the boxes for casual and experienced players
- New Edition is 'this year'
- More details will be available for you at Warhammer Fest
- None of your existing models are going anywhere - you will just get new ones
- Different styles of points. Power Level (simple and narrative) and Matched Play (points for everything in a granular manner)
- There WILL be new factions and AT LAUNCH!
- There is no longer a cap on statistics at ten...so there can be some nasty stuff out there. For example big weapons do multiple wounds etc making it feel very hardcore and bloody
- The game scales from around '1000 points' all the way up to massive play. So, smaller skirmishes up to Apocalypse style games
- Now a keyword driven system so it works more like Age Of Sigmar. Abilities will pass on to units they SHOULD work with
- However you can also easily ally with other armies with benefits - but they are trying to cut down on Deathstars
- Close combat is going to be as viable as ranged fighting
- If you recently bought a Codex or Rulebook within 8 weeks of the announcement you can email the Games Workshop team and get a voucher to the value of the books to help you out as you look towards the new edition
It's neat to see we're getting an insight into the game this early!
Will you be tuning in?

New GW indeed …. (Goodbye Mr Kirby … don’t let the door hit you on the way out)
@beardragon14 don’t let the door hit you on the way out … for shame sir ….. I hope it knocks him flying 🙂
As to the bit I caught I am more optimistic that I have been, proof with be in the playing but there are a lot of the right noises here.
… Yes you are quite right @dags , this” turn the other cheek” rubbish has knobs on … I stand corrected
Kirby will be fine, he has that Golden parachute after all ;p
They do seem to have been running on all cylinders since his departure.
Too bad I wouldn’t touch Facebook with a 10 foot pole.
Codices and other books focussing on themes as opposed to (more) rules and statistics is definitely a good thing in a business model where unit statistics and core rules are free as you wouldn’t want to restrict the ability to buy into new stuff by ‘demanding’ they buy the book first.
Minimizing the use of templates is one thing, but removing them all ?
Isn’t that kind of missing the point ?
Especially when you consider that Bolt Action 2.0 introduced templates for very specific gameplay/balance related reasons.
I guess the point is to speed up the game. If you point a flamer at a unit, you need to see which models it hits etc. Now, just say “I’m shooting flamer at this unit”. then you move on to damage.
Now that I think about it, does that make much of a difference??
It does! It was/is possible to spread your team wide enough to only get one or two guys under a template. With the new rules it could be possible that the distance between the individual models is irrelevant. Which means now the teams start hugging each other where it was up until now common to spread them out as far as possible.
So it does sound like a way to speed up the game then. I guess it also makes flamers more worthwhile if you can guarantee a hit on a whole squad. It also means that all weapons will follow a similar stat structure. Again, speeding up the game.
I can see how it will seem negative to some players to make these changes but maybe Justin is right, get the rules out of the way to make the game more narrative! (paraphrase ahoy)
You might be right, but there is one born every minute!
If it’s anything like previous major revisions, the initial army lists are stopgaps ’til their new codex comes out. Yes, *technically* a playable army right outta the gate. But if your army doesn’t get a codex for a year or 5….
Blaster was here… & is intrigued by 8th, but wary
I have to say, these little snippets fuel my optimism for 8th ed.
Wow, this really is a ground-up rewrite. I wonder what they mean by new factions? Who’s out there in the lore that isn’t represented? (Keeping in mind that Squats haven’t been mentioned in a couple of decades.)
Squats! Zoats! Ratlings! I have no idea!
Oh please, yes ….
From my understanding, “new faction” may not be entirely new army – so it could be at a guess ‘Death Guard’ and ‘Gulliman’s crusade’ (my bet for the box)
Also Ork clans, elder craftworlds etc could be ‘new factions’
Personally I wouldn’t be shocked to see Old ones returning as a cross xenos factions.
One of the chaps in GW Dublin mentioned it’d be Ultramarines v Death Guard. Personally I’d like to see the Guard get fleshed out. Drag the Death Korps and Elysians out of Forgeworld and give Guard back some of their flavour and personality. The Catachan could do with some new rules that work in games other than Death Worlds. With Cadia gone they have the gap.
That was confusing to read back. Everything after the first line is in reference to the ‘Imperial’ Guard.
Exodite Eldar, cus i really need space wood elves 😉
Old ones returning would be good too, said something like that a while back to give some brains to orks.
As @irredeemable says from what ive been told smurfs vs DG will be the new box set, hopefully with another traitorous plastic primarch not far off….
I’m pretty sure it’s Mortarion with Fulgrim not far behind.
A sales rep i spoke to didnt say anything to deny that and he usually corrects things if they are wrong….
I’m thinking it would be good if they keep a traitor loyal cadence going for primarch releases… Wouldn’t be surprised to see either Kahn, Russ or vulkan next for the imperium, Kahn because of history with death guard, Russ because of inevitable row with papa smurf and vulkan because of trazyn’s presense in gathering storm and seems the least effort to link story arcs…
…does it only have 11 pages of rules? No cap on weapon strength either – someone is about to get stiffed again.
We don’t even know yet if weapon strenght will still be a thing. They might go full Age of Sigmar.
Never go full Age of Sigmar
I think they mean Factions like AoS; Order, Chaos, Death, Destruction. So your individual *army* is now part of a larger *faction*.
Blaster was here…
Its done nothing but excite me further!
I do wonder about how the any weapon can hurt anything idea…. not sure I like that but we’ll see what its like!
Decent offer of them to sort people who bought new books recently
This all sounds excellent. Now we just have to wait for the release.
Some of those seem interesting while others make me scratch my head.
So looking forward to this. Since getting back into the hobby a few years ago, 40k seemed to get heavier and clunky, I am really hoping this brings the fun back into things. Hopefully the “New GW” since Mr Kirby’s departure is an indicator of good times to come.
Anything can hurt anything….An autopistol (a revolver) can hurt a landraider? I appreciate the stat card approach with a fixed to hit/to wound value (it removes the charts) but some weapons shouldn’t be able to hurt some things… unless the save is high and the wounds equally high?
Maybe it’ll be rediculously hard to wound a LR with an autopistol, and if you do it represents getting lucky and shooting the driver through his vision slit? Or a lucky shot going through an open hatch and ricocheting into the munitions?
Yeah, I think it’s along the lines of *anything can hurt anything, but some things need to get really lucky*. Like in Shadow War: Armageddon- Technically, an autogun can hurt a Terminator. But a 5 to wound followed by a 3+ Save on 2d6 means it’s not very likely!
Blaster was here…
Did i read that right? Terminators save on a 3+ on 2d6? When did that happen? There are tentative signs that i might actually like this coming edition of the game after all. ( Odds are still against it. )
You’re completely right, but ‘right’ doesn’t sell models.
Turn interruption seems a massive step forward for GW
As is the voucher exchange
They said in their stream that before 8th edition you could get a voucher if you bought something 4 weeks before announcment, I never knew that.
Unfortunatly its just once per phase .. but it will be interesting to see how this works
I think it’s looking to make sure that it doesn’t become too abused. Although with the way changes happen in AoS I’m sure they can rectify things as they need to.
Guess 40k would be the only game where being able to react effectively to you opponents moves is considered abuse .. in fact its so outlandish in 40k terms that overwatch is carried out at BS1 in 7th. What other systems would have stupid stuff like that in just for balance sake?
new factions? Wish they’d do enslavers, if only to shut me up :p
interesting times one book to rule them all? I bet you will still see players with a library to work from.
One main book to rule hem all, I’m sure. Like other major rules revisions, they come outta the gate with stopgap army lists. So yeah, every army playable, but armies that get a codex quick-ish vs a stopgap army list isn’t gonna end well for the non-codex army.
Blaster was here… & has seen this exact type of thing several times before!
…love it! Anyway, it’s not like Wacoshop have ever pulled a fast one before. Just wait for the “limited” edition(s) to start.
It’s only limited by the number we didn’t tell you we have and will ‘find’ later.
Everything can hurt everything sound like exploding 6’s to me.
I don’t understand the thing with the books. Do they mean that there are 5 books at launch and any of them is sufficient to play the game?
5 books for different factions so depending on your armies you could need more than one, examples were on for the Xenos and on for the forces of the Imperium.
Wow, this could be awesome. 40k has so much potential, but imo it’s not been quite as fun as it should be for at least twenty years. I’m very optimistic about this.
Having two different point systems is potentially inspired and I wasn’t expecting it at all – a quick simple point system like AoS for those that want that, and a granular one for those that want to keep all the unit customisation. And vouchers? Never thought I’d see the day. Exciting times.
I was watching this live and missed a bit so thanks for filling the gaps. This is possibly the best news to EVER come out of games workshop.
Really looking forward to where this goes
I think this is a very positive move for 40k. I liked it but to get someone new into the game they just about pulled their hair out learning it. Maybe the change is going to pull new players in and put some fun back into it.
I’m trying to figure out the five way split with the army books.
1. Marines (Dark Angels, Blood Angels, Space Wolves, Grey Knights, Deathwatch)
2. Imperium (Astra Militarum, Cult Mechanicus, Skitarii, Agents.)
3. Chaos (Chaos Space Marines, Khorne Daemonkin, Daemons, Traitor Legions)
4. Milksop Xenos (Eldar, Harlequins, Dark Eldar, Tau)
5. Hardcore Xenos (Tyranids, Genestaler Cults, Orks, Necrons)
I know that’s not every individual supplement, but it’s the big ones.
I also see the psychic and tactical cards are on the way out.
Forgot to include Knights in the Imperium book.
I was thinking about this and my take on it could be 1. A book on fluff with the new rules added, like they did at launch of AoS 2. A book for the imperium 3. A book for Chaos 4. A book for Xenos 5. Generals Handbook which they said they were doing in the last FAQ The 3 main faction books would fit as again it’s the same as they’ve done for AoS and it would be a quick way to get started quickly before they release specific books. I for one had fallen out of love with… Read more »
My take on the 5 books They will all be the same apart from the faction content, so pretty much a faction orientated generals handbook if you will. 1) Imperium (guard, ad and cult mech, knights, SoB, SoS, Custodes, Assassins) 2) Space Marines (nothing faction specific other than the short flavor backstories, but rules for vehicles and weapons will be universal i.e. BA with Grav weapons and AA rhinos etc. 3) Chaos Demons and CSM 4) Nids (nids, GS cults) 5) Xenos (Tau, Orks, Eldars, Necrons, Old ones) <– this is the one im excited by as it would be… Read more »
@chaingun
That makes sense too. The only thing I’d wonder at would be the Imperium book. To cover all sub factions it’d have to be huge! It’d be 10+ Codices being lumped together.
@irredeemable could just be abridged fluff from the codexs with rules and some core unit warscroll equivalents with the rest being available online like it was with aos launch, with the detailed faction specific books being like a battletome
Well ‘big’ 5 to me would be Space Marines, Imperial Guard, Chaos, Eldar and Orks. As for new factions could be a dust of old one or Hrud (Space Skaven). Certainly intriguing.
Is it still IGOUGO though or is it with a LOTR tweek?
Sounded like the Command Point turn interrupt is the exception, not the rule.
& the Faction thing is probably like AoS- Order, Chaos, Death, Destruction. So our individual armies are part of a larger Faction.
Blaster was here…
It would be funny and sad at same time if they put all xenos in one group meaning that you had something like Tau and Nids or Orks and Crons working together. You know, factions that no way would work together. Least in AoS those tend to make sense like having all undead to be in one group.
That should be discouraged from happening due to the way keywords work and the fact that it will be harder for you to fulfil those force organisation charts for command points and other benefits.
I would love it if Space Skaven (no need to point out Mantic’s stuff please) came to be, but I honestly can’t see new races coming along any time soon. When it comes to the 2 new factions, one of them must be the Deathguard while the other is most likely going to be a new flavour of new loyalist marine. Considering one of the new images of 40k is that picture of a marine that is loyalist on one side and corrupted (nurgle) on the other, I fully expect that to be the 2 player starter set (we’ve never… Read more »
One command point per phase was the wording .. was hoping for more but anything that abuses igougo is good abuse i guess
The lord of change has spoken ! Bit miffed about the codex’ that I’ve brought since Feb been void … but looking forward to new 40K and it’s long over due revamp !
Monster Damage will gradient like vehicles, stats will get weaker. The stats will also “work” harder than before, they removed the stat cap at 10. Things will have lots of wounds, good armour saves which means even though everything can hit everything, it’s going to take awhile for them to go down if you’re only using little guns. Sounds really damn good so far!
every minute this looks better and better
Interesting. Haven’t played 40K since 5th, as 6th and 7th are too bloated for me. Many things here have got me really interested, which I didn’t think would ever happen again.
