Shadow War: Armageddon Book Coming + New 40k Edition Announced
April 24, 2017 by brennon
We talked about it a little bit when we showed off the teaser trailer over the weekend at Salute but yes, there is a new edition of Warhammer 40,000 around the corner! Right now though Games Workshop has also put together the book for Shadow War: Armageddon separate from the main game.
This skirmish game, using the old Necromunda rules with a few updates and tweaks, has gone down a storm with folks. It's a great idea to change this to include the regular armies and factions of Warhammer 40,000. While it would have been nice to see gangs back on the tabletop it makes much more sense for them to draw on the range they already have.
Maybe gangs are something we'll see Forge World look at in the future, or we'll see a limited release of their metal range over on the Games Workshop store with some rules in a future White Dwarf? It would be cool to see gangs fighting back against Imperial incursion into their territory.
It would be neat to hear what you guys think about Shadow War: Armageddon. Make sure to drop some thoughts in the comments below.
A New Edition
The big news was that there is indeed a new edition of Warhammer 40,000 on the cards. A new website accompanied the video at the top of the page.
The website goes into detail about the background, factions and future of the new edition and it looks like we'll be taking a step forward with this edition of the game.
For one it looks like we're getting the three ways to play they mentioned last time they teased changes to Warhammer 40,000. Matched, Open and Narrative play are the options giving anyone a chance to get stuck into the world. It worked for Age of Sigmar and the General's Handbook.
Additionally, it seems like we'll be getting annual updates to the game and a rules system which is accessible to newcomers and veterans. They have been working with the community to find out what YOU want which is great to hear.
For example, this was great to hear...
"Come on! This is New Games Workshop™
Seriously though, everything we're talking about now is just an extension of all the community engagement work we've been doing over this last year and a half. We've learned a lot from you guys and gals, and we've tried really hard to make sure everything you've asked for is included. And if we've missed something?
Drop us a line on the Warhammer 40,000 Facebook page and let us know. We'll make sure your requests are given proper consideration."
So with a new edition around the corner do you think you'll be diving in and giving Warhammer 40,000 a go when it hits?
Let us know your thoughts below...

My thoughts are that this could lure me back to 40k … (It is still only a “could “: however, it would take the reappearance of an army of “short fat guys” to guarantee it ) but it is looking good
2nd ed. is still out there with its Black Codex.
I dont think the short fat guys are coming back, but you could always convert up Kharadron overlords and proxy them for tau, or admech or marines or whatever fits best
8th edition OOOOHMAHHHHHGAWDDDDDD!!!!!
Couple of things from the stream: Stil uses d6 All unist will have the same statline so probably no rear front side armour for vehicles vehicles + monster will get weaker if wounded like in AoS It will have movement values and safe modifiers every modell will get new rules There will be command points that give ingame bonuses (you cna use one per phase) and you will get them by building your army, there are 14 detachments or so for that. no templates Every army gets rules on day 1 via 5 buyable books expansiosn like Planet Strike will… Read more »
About: “Everything can wound everything” as i haven’t seen the full stream so this and some other bits are from the web, some other sources say toughness and weapon strength will still be a thing so I don’t know if one or both are correct.
It’s nice that there is another chance to get SW:A rules. We have not really seen enough about 40k 8th edition to say how it will turn out.
So, AoS in space? The details will clear this up, but it doesn’t look like it’s going to bring me back. Funny how comparing reactions here to B&C is like comparing ckalk and cheese….
@berger15 I didn’t necessarily get the impression it was AoS in space, indeed I hope it isn’t, but taking some concepts for it in a tested and refined rules set is not a bad thing. Anything can wound anything did make me grimace a bit, but it sounds like strength and toughness remain.
Pre-ordered the shadow war book, and starting on getting bits together for a Blood Axe raiding party and some Armageddon Ork hunters. Would love to be able to do a Snake bit band with Boars.
The 40k livestream today has left me cautiously optimistic for 8th, but detail and play experience will be the make or break.
As long as I don’t have to consult 3 books to know what my weapons or what rules a formation has it’s a win.
I do love all the tears around the web about how bad it’s going to be. Nothing says “first world problems” more than complaining about rules for a game. We went through all this with AoS and look where we are now.
Alas mate, “the glass is half empty crowd” are always the loudest. I’ll wait and see what it’s like, hand wringing ruins my skin. ( .. and moaning makes the neighbours jump to the wrong conclusions)
@andz anyone moaning before they tried it needs ignoring, I certainly want to try what they have done. I do think the ease of access to rules to get your minis on the table is key, looked at returning in 7th and it was a mess. However, they need to avoid the AoS model as to me that is equally poor.
Will disagree on where we are now with AoS though, as to me and many others its is a subpar game, the same ‘quality’ would be end of me ever returning to 40k.
Stupid question, but doe anyone think the new edition will have cross faction armies, like in SIgmar?
