Fantasy Flight Games Releases More Information About Legend Of The Five Rings

Fantasy Flight Games has released more information about the upcoming release of the new version of Legend of the Five Rings card game.
The biggest difference you will learn right off of the bat is this will no longer be a CCG (collectable card game), but an LCG (Living Card Game).
According to the announcement...
"Legend of the Five Rings: The Card Game is a player-influenced LCG® that sees two players take on the role of one of the seven Great Clans of Rokugan, vying for military and political control of the land while maintaining Rokugan society’s strict code of honor.
Each player commands their forces with two separate decks: A Dynasty Deck fills their provinces with characters and holdings and a Conflict Deck consisting of tactics, maneuvers, followers and attachments that can be used to turn the tide in a struggle for supremacy.
During a game, players will engage in conflicts, both political and military based, with the goal of breaking their opponent’s stronghold and winning the game. But the rules of society are absolute, and even in the fire of battle and heat of Rokugan’s courts, clans must remember the tenets of Bushidō, lest they lose everything in their single-minded pursuit of glory.
The Legend of the Five Rings: The Card Game Core Set comes with everything a player needs to explore the seven great clans of Rokugan, the Crab Clan, Crane Clan, Dragon Clan, Lion Clan, Phoenix Clan, Scorpion Clan, and Unicorn Clan. It also includes a variety of tokens, cards, and rule sheets that make the Core Set the definitive starting point for the Legend of the Five Rings: The Card Game."
I have a couple of the older sets and the new artwork is just as stunning so from that perspective alone it is worth grabbing the set.
We here are fans of the FFG line of card games as we have and play Star Wars, Game of Thrones, and Lord of the Rings. I think this will make a nice addition to the collection.

I loved the old game and i guess i’ll like the new one too after i read the announcment yesterday. I like some of the changes, with some others i’m not sure but i’ll have to wait and see how it plays. The reset to that early time period i like a lot, it’s a fresh start with still a lot of what i know and some interesting changes (the crane champion is a girl now). When the AGOT LCG launched a couple of years ago there were a lot of early tournaments that used a single core box format in which you combined two houses together to make a deck. It meant you could start out with just one box and go from there if you wanted.
L5R was really interesting CCG with tournaments that effected ongoing story so it’s good that it gets second chance as LCG

i think this is going to be the card game that gets me to take the plunge.
beautiful setting and art. in at the ground level. political as well as martial, i like the idea of a card game offering things my miniatures games do not. LCG for my first card game sounds sensible as well.
so many great looking player vs player options out there it’s a tough choice though.
Could someone explain what are the main differences of the game? Netrunner it’s the asymmetrical gameplay, Conquest have the battles on the different planets…
What’s this game ”mojo”?
Its version of Conquest’s planet battles is the conflicts against your opponent’s provinces. As you destroy them, it not only pushes you closer to what I imagine will be the primary victory condition of destroying four provinces, but it also reduces your opponet’s ability to recruit characters, as they are played onto and bought from provinces. You also have the honor mechanic which has two further victory conditions attached to it.
That destroyed provinces don’t let you recruit new guys is not true any longer. In the new Version a province egt’s broken, but you’ll still be able to recruit from them. Once you’ve broken 3 of the opponents 4 provinces you may attack his stronghold (ok it’s like a fifth province, but out of reach at the beginning). Once you break this one you’ve won.
You still destroy four provinces to win, as the stronghold is now a province. The only difference in this respect is in the CCG you would destroy the last of the four provinces to win, whereas in the LCG once you’ve destroyed three provinces you open up the fifth which you must destroy, but you still have to destroy four. I must have missed the bit about still being able to buy from a destroyed province in the article 🙂
The old answer was the awesome player base, the players impacting the story, and the cinematic game. The old game had plenty of problems but made up for it with enthusiasm making it one of the oldest continuing card games next only to magic. The new version from FFG seems to have kept all the good and come up with what seems to be a fantastic game. My initial impression is that the game is full of meaningful choices. The announcement page says pre-release at GenCon 2017, with full release in 4th quarter 2017.
There are few certainties in life. That I will be buying three L5R core boxes is one of them.

I never played the ccg. That said, the Game of Thrones card game is really cool and FFg has been producing solid games. I am so looking forward to this game!!!
