Warhammer Underworlds: Shadespire Undead Warband Revealed
April 13, 2017 by brennon
Games Workshop has expanded on the Warhammer Underworlds: Shadespire with news of their new warband, the Deathrattle Sepulchral Guard.
"These Sepulchral Guard are the former warriors of the city of Shadespire. Unlike many of the mindless shambling automata of the Mortal Realms’ undead legions, these once-proud warriors retain shards of their memories from before the cursing of their city, and each is a unique individual in their own right."
It's cool that they have these skeletons remembering their former selves and including a bit of character into the collection. I love their leader model and the rest of skeletons are top notch.
These characters will play in a different way to the other warbands, marking out all of the choices in Warhammer Underworlds as quite unique. From their blog...
"...this Deathrattle force favours a player with a considered, strategic approach to battle. They have plenty of tricks up their ragged sleeves to tip a combat in their favour, chief amongst them being the Sepulchral Warden’s ability to inspire and bolster the other undead warriors around him."
It's finally good to see some more releases from this collection and indeed for the armies of Death in particular. While their skeletons are cool they are very Old World and this gives a more heroic 'Age of Sigmar' feel to their force in terms of scale and proportions.
The miniatures continue to fit in line with what already exists out there but hopefully, we see a whole new box of the undead coming out to match with this new aesthetic design.
What do you think of the Sepulchral Guard?

These looks really nice! I’ve got a small Deathrattle force for AoS, these be very cool to put into a skeleton unit for some variation. I’m not totally sold on the Shadespire concept.
Liking what I see so far with this game.
Still no word on release date, I wouldn’t be surprised of GW are saving this for something like GenCon.
Its currently set to be near the end of the year, originally it was said to be Q4. I bet we’ll see a few more Grand Alliance sub factions teased before then.
BoW must do a Play Through of this game. This game will have organized play and will be approachable to many non-GW fans well.
Here is an idea. Lets have US v EU tournament of the game. Pick 12 lucky players in a raffle on both sides of the pond. Play through the game in round robin elimination mode. The final winners on each side of the pond go to the BoW studios for the first championship as part of promotion for the release of the game.
That would be totally epic!
I’m definitely seeing more and more of the rackham influence in new GW stuff. First the tree spirit guys, then the new overlord dwarfs and I have that exact skeleton coming out of the ground holding a sword in my confrontation collection.
Not a bad thing mind as I miss Rackham.
I love these bone men !
From Frostgarve to Shadespire, these guys work everywhere.
Nice models. Maybe something that could lure me into AoS after all.
Any particular reason for them being left handed?
I think one of the problems with the Old World is the style was very established and defined, which didn’t allow for departures or additions in such radically different styles.
Lloyd, more skellies for the Ice King!
I’m hoping the price point for these Warband packs will be reasonable. I’ve got my eye on these for entirely different reasons than Shadespire!
Nice, might pick up a pack for dungeon crawling
those are nice model! i love skellies and undead!
I rather like those. I always raise an eyebrow at reanimated warriors wielding scythes but it is kinda cool – and I did put a scythe guy in the last batch of skellies I put together.
I always justify it as “farmers can be re-amimated too … it’s an equal opportunity thing”
I really like these skeletons. I get more interested in this the more I hear and see.
After hearing good things about Shadespire following Adepticon, I was thinking of giving it a try upon release. Now I’ll definitely be picking it up. Those skeletons look amazing! They’ll be perfect for Frostgrave too.
That being said, I still think they should have called them the Shadespire Boners.
I’m trying to keep this one straight in my head- was Shardspire the new Mordheim, or was it the expanded version of Gorechosen?
This is “tactical arena combat”
Its a completely new game not based on anything previously set in the AoS universe.
This is shaping up to be the first Games Workshop game I am considering getting in over a decade….
love the look of the new GW skeletons.
These are the skeletons we deserved when warhammer fantasy was still around.
When will GW stop putting skulls on everything ?
WOW I may buy another GW model or two. As I really like skeleies. They can keep their games.
Shame, you are missing out
These are nice sculpts. My interest will be purely based on the game play though.
These sekletons are awesome, I need them right now not at the end of the year that’s to damn long.
Some decent looking miniatures from GW after such a long time? I’m impressed! Maybe there is still some speck of hope left…
Good if the price is right. They are, however, similar to a host of other skeletons already on the market from other producers.
It won’t be. I foresee the word “pass” somewhere in your future.
Those are some of the nicest Skellies I’ve seen, that ‘leader’ mini looks great, these guys have got me looking forward to Morde… I mean Shadspire
