Army Painter RuneWars Hobby Weekend Live Blog – Friday
How To Straighten Your Bendy Bits!
We stop in with Jonas to learn about how you work out those bendy spears and turn them into good thrusting weapons.
This technique requires very, very hot water so make sure to be careful when you're working away.
had to do this a lot in the past
Haven’t had to do this yet, so it’s good to see a pro do it before I try it.
Normally dip mine in cold water straight after.
Me too. It reduces mistakes during the re-setting stage (learned the hard way).
Agreed, although the issue with dipping it in cold water is moving the miniature can ‘un-straighten’ what you’re trying to fix. So you have to do it carefully. Personally I get my bowl of boiling water next to the sink, and then put the cold tap on very slightly. That way I can move the mini under the running cold water without having to do any hand aerobics to keep it straight. Also worth pointing out that when you put a mini in boiling water you can stretch the plastic too, which is hard to un-stretch, but can create some… Read more »
Great points @tchrin – interestingly I have tried the cold water techniques and find it easier to carefully dip the mini into a bowl of cold water than use the running tap method, but both are equally valid ways to set the new positioning quickly. Thanks for pointing out the tip for cloaks, haven’t felt the need to ever do this but it is a great idea. I have also used the hot water re-positioning technique to correct ‘leaning’ figures by straightening their legs and for adjusting arms slightly for different weapon positioning.
What I was gonna say, works very well with GW’s Finecast as well!
Another great tip! If this weekend goes as well as we have seen so far this is going to be a great way to get all the tips and tricks put together as a video with some intros as part of a hobby lab series.
I hate when you have to do this but it does happen and as he shows it’s not that hard to fix. Just annoying with 2 handed spears and the like.
Always hated bendy spears, ruins the look of a mini frequently.
And now easy to fix!
These are great videos for newcomers to the hobby. Just simple techniques that everyone should know and no one should be afraid of them.
Agreed @petey9, I’m not really a newcomer but I have always heard of these techniques but Its nice to actually see them in action!!!
I think a lot of spears are going to need this.
I need to do this for a bunch of miniatures I have.
had to use this trick a lot in the past, mostly on all those different board game minis of course.
Thanks for this! I have never been great at doing this
Thanks for the tip ^-^
Very good bit to show. I have had to do this with other models. People don’t realize how easy it is until they are shown.
really nice with do much hobby focus in the hobby weekend 🙂
yeah more tips 🙂
btw What country is the Army Painter from?
Great tips to include! I have had to boil and reform loooooots of Bones minis.
God to love a good tip!
For large models sometime i use the hairdryer hot untill is soft put it in position then go with cold air and when it is lockd in position it goes under the faucet for 30s to be sure it cool to the core (for the big models)
I wish this wasn’t needed but its not terrible. It does take the speed to build the models away when you have to fix them like that, but no big deal
I can feel it hardening in my hand
Similar technique as when working with restic. That same technique can be used to make simple alterations to your model.
Well this one I have used on tons of Kickstarter models.
Had to do this a lot with my SDE minis
I have done that to a ton of Reaper Bones models I paint for a friend of mine, his RPG characters.
Yeah, the Reaper Bones need this about 80% of the time 😀 😀
But so easy to do and so effective.
