Community Spotlight: Dungeon Delvers, Dwarves & Desert Dwelling Armies
March 10, 2017 by crew
We're getting stuck into another collection of awesome painting projects from our Hobby & Painting Forum. Once again we delve into your hobby to give us the inspiration we need to paint up our armies.
Without further ado let's get stuck into what you've been working on including some Historical and Fantasy projects...
Dungeon Saga by onlyonepinman
We kick things off with a dungeon delving favourite from us here at Beasts of War. onlyonepinman has been working away on his Dungeon Saga collection for quite a while and his recent focus has been rather awesome as he looked at some of the characters including Hraath here...
...and Thrundak Skullsplitter. Both of these schemes show a different range of techniques for painting up your models. The work on the shading and the highlights for Hraath are awesome and it's nice to see a very vibrant character coming to life on the tabletop.
The subtle blending to create a flaming sword also deserves kudos! The armour plating also provides a nice distinction between the dragon skin and the rest of the model making him stand out more.
Thrundak has received a very wild and feral looking paint scheme. The skin is done in a similar style but the rest of the model speaks more to his lifestyle. We particularly like the work on the fur for this Orc and the little touch of blood on the axe blade showing he's just made a kill.
We would potentially suggest streaking that blood back across the axe head too, though, showing the motion of the axe blade as it would have cut through his foe. You can go and see more of his work over on the thread linked above including the likes of this epic Troll.
We can't wait to see what the collection is going to be like when he's finished. The best thing about Dungeon Saga is that it is effectively a hobby in of itself as you build and paint the models and terrain for your dungeon delving adventures.
Afrika Korps & German Sturmabteilung by madgolem
madgolem has started up a topic on the forums to show off his projects (which is just what we want to see!) and one of the first projects was one that was inspired by the recent Boot Camp for Flames Of War. See what you think of his Afrika Korps army.
If you're interested in where the particular components of this army came from, all Tanks are from Zvezda (1/100) with bits and pieces from Battlefront. The Stuka is from Revell (1/144). He points out that while it would love to get decals for his tanks it's very hard to get them in Germany since they usually feature swastikas.
We really liked the look of this scheme was was clean, neat and simple but providing you with a lot of contrast on the tabletop. It's always nice to be able to actually distinguish between your tanks and the sand they're rolling around on!
One of his recent projects, however, is for Warhammer Historical and The Great War.
These German Sturmabteilung are from Great War Miniatures and show off a squad of soldiers charging off into the action. These Stormtroopers are looking fantastic with a lot of work going into making them stand out on the tabletop. The painting is clean and neat and really delves into detail on the faces.
The 'dirt and grime' of the war has been kept to the bases which look like they have a nice churned up mud feel.
Grim Hammers by brushstroke
We close things out for this week with a look at something more from Middle-Earth. Here we have a unit of Grim Hammers for The Hobbit by brushstroke.
Presented on a display base like this they look fantastic, ready to defend the halls of Erebor against Orcs, Goblins and whatever else threatens to try and get to their gold. When you get a closer look at these models you're immediately struck by the amount of detail that brushstroke has managed to get out of this plastic kit.
The armour work, in his own words, was experimental but we think it has come off very nicely indeed. It isn't as dark and brooding as the armour from the films but it really does highlight the geometric design of the armour plates.
You got to love the work that's done into their cloaks and the beards too where each of them has had a little bit of highlighting to bring it to life and stand out against the armour. The Captain in the background (top right) also looks superb, leading his warriors into battle.
Show Us Your Stuff!
We’ve been blown away by the work from the community once again and would love to see your work in the Hobby & Painting Forum.
All you have to do is head over to the forum linked above and start your own topic to start posting your work. It’s simple to upload photos of your work-in-progress and finished projects and we like seeing the process unfold.
We also don’t mind if you’re a newcomer to painting or a veteran. Everything you folks do inspires us to keep at it with our hobby and we have a wonderful community who like to get involved and share techniques.
What do you think of our entries to the hall of fame this week?

More than well deserved 😀
Once again, some very well painted and presented mini`s. I`m especially liking the FWW German`s, not seen them before, but then again i`ve never really looked for any (something i may need to look in to).
Well done guy`s.
Wow, great minis and superb artistry all round. Always love seeing peoples astounding efforts! 🙂

First up @onlyonepinman I am glad to see that people can also recognise the skill that is on show here that you really put some work into these 😀
@madgolem this may be the first I have seen of the vehicles but I have comment before on how I actually really loved those historicals which everyones how rare that is for me 😀
@brushstroke what can I say may your putting a tremendous amount of work in here and I think you will absolutely kill it when it gets to armies on parade 😀
I have loved @onlyonepinman ‘s Dungeon Saga plog (…and now it’s finished …..sob) He has some real talent, which he needs to give himself ore credit for.
Madgolem’s tanks are lovely… look at the detail … they really look authentic
@brushstroke ‘s dwarfs are superb too. I am currently painting these models, albeit slowly and they don’t look half as good as this. A magnificent job. (I can’t believe I missed the original post)
Not quite finished, there’s one last piece on the way, a very special piece too!
Oh that’s good to know .. I can’t wait
