Dawn Of War III: Are You Looking Forward To Grim Dark PC Gaming?
March 7, 2017 by brennon
Dawn of War III is really shaping up to be quite the epic return for this franchise from Relic and SEGA. Picking up with Gabriel Angelos and his Blood Ravens once more the Space Marines will be facing off against the Eldar and the Orks in one of the craziest looking games to date.
Using a lot of what made Dawn Of War great they have returned to a more standard RTS feel, embracing the quicker feel of games like StarCraft as well. That doesn't mean the heroes and special units are gone from the likes of Dawn Of War II however...and it looks like they've mixed together the best of the best.
Factions
The factions, as mentioned above break down into the Space Marines led by Gabriel Angelos, the Eldar by Farseer Magha and the Orks of Gorgutz 'Ead'unter. Each of them is looking to claim the Spear Of Khaine.
IGN put together a great video above showing off some of the neat abilities and character options open to the different factions. Personally, I'm loving the look of the Imperial Knight for the Space Marines. So much death and destruction!
Environments
Another thing that has been focused in on, this time from Gametrailers, is the types of environments you'll be playing through in the games single player and multiplayer modes. The design is fantastic and could be one of those things where we look to create tabletops based on the environments from the game.
Imagine creating the ice/lava world of Acheron or the Starforts of the Imperials on the tabletop? You'd have some brilliant worlds to fight over with loads of fascinating uses for environmental rules like we talked about on a past Weekender episode.
It's nice to see game developers using the space on the map to not only show off the units but also tell a bit of a story; it's pretty much what we do when it comes to building a table to play our games on for the tabletop.
Multiplayer Action
The games always had a solid singleplayer mode but the multiplayer is where this game really came into its own on occasion. Once again IGN collected together some great footage of how the game plays. The fast and frenetic pace of the game this time around combined with the massive amount of action and wild effects going off from all sides means not only is this going to tax your PC, but it's going to also be quite the feast for the eyes.
Interestingly, the multiplayer, and the game in general, actually bought a lot of people to the tabletop from the digital realm. Seeing the forces battle it out on the screen made them not only want to create armies based on the characters but also try out this strange hobby we love so much.
It would be cool to find out if any of you were drawn into Warhammer 40,000 due to the Dawn Of War games. If you were, let us know below and tell us what armies you collected after being inspired!
Will you be playing when the game releases April 27th, 2017?

Definitely look shiney and off pretty darn fine production quality. I do wonder though how the actual gameplay will work out. Most of the in-game footage we’ve seen does seem to suggest yet another step away from RTS and towards the MOBA-esque approach that seems to have taken over what little is left of the genre these days. Most of the core mechanics of DoW I seem to be completely gone while unit flexibility seems to have been completely replaced with a rock/papers/scissors approach. Not to mention Sega has less than a positive reputation when it comes to their approach… Read more »
It looks pretty but I’m still waiting for a proper (grand-)strategy game set in the 40K universe.
Hows this:

Worms Armageddon was excellent
Loved DOW I, hated DOW II. This looks … interesting.
I had only played and collected WHFB (aside from Necromunda) when DOW I came out, and it did inspire me to collect 40K … about 11 or 12 playable armies’ worth 🙂 I actually have more 40K than fantasy stuff painted now.
DOW III will have a hard time living up to DOW I, but beating II should be no problem.
Think I’ll go play some Soulstorm!
Yeah wasn’t that big a fan of DOW2 either
Looks good. I think my son be playing on it more than me. Can’t wait to pick it up
I haven’t really a pc to play this unfortunately so I will have to pass but I loved All previous instalments. Winter Assault in particular 😎
Footage looks good.
Still in doubt but I might place a pre-order.
I love both DoW1 and DoW2 so I must say that DoW3 looks really good successor for first two games. For this one I might still do some PC gaming after all.
Really need to build a new PC…. but that means less money for minis….. oh why is life so hard! 🙂
Orks! I swear fealty to Orks!!! Waaagh!!!!
I am not a fan of RTS games in general, but this one has caught my attention. I love the 40K universe and this might draw me to buy this game. I think I will also need to upgrade my computer to handle the graphics. The Commodore 64 might just mot cut it, nor the new one I bought 2 years ago.
Goddman this looks good!
Ehhh wait and see for this one, no cover, no sinc kills, loads of effects….
DOW 1 had the massive battles, DOW 2 had the character, DOW 3 seems to be missing the essence of been DOW, looks more like a starcraft.
Cant wait for it, was always a massive fan of DOW1, I thought DOW2 sucked, so I was pleased to hear its going to be more similar to the first game.
OOooo looks as if its going to be a cracker.
DoW is the only 40k game I’ve ever played.
And thanks to Steam sales I got DoW 2 for cheap too so while that was *eh* different it is good to see the shift to a larger sized battles.
I have to say that for anyone not used to 40k lore the lines those characters have to say are weird and the plot doesn’t make much sense either, but that’s ok. Sometimes a bit of campy weirdness is fun too.
Instant buy. Player every game in the series they have put out.
man the music of the trailers is just the best
I like the triumphant return of angry 80’s synth in the last three years or so. I missed you synth. You complete me. You are the best digital cheese.
I’m giddy with anticipation for this game!
Had lots of fun with DoW 1, LOVED Dawn of War 2.. have little to no interest in DoW 3, animations don’t fit at all for 40k’s grim darkness, not fan of the art style, taking away sync kills and very little cover stuff except the big shield things unlike their previous games, 3 factions (granted a lot more units and specially giant ones, which understandable took more time).
It just looks like Starcraft 2 copy and taking lot of things from moba’s, was hyped seeing it announced and amazing cinematic trailer, then just disappointments from there.
You can bet additional factions will be DLC … that’s the way the industry works these days. 🙁
@limburger, what like 40k;) least this starter box comes with 3 factions…
Shame my pc won’t run it without turning everything down to polished turd graphics settings
Same position as myself. My pixels keep losing in Total War: Warhammer.
Do plan on building a new one this year though.
Maybe it’s something to do with my age – and my deteriorating hand-eye co-ordination – but these previews give the impression there’s far too much going on at the same time. I’ve found the same with Total War games – I’m far more comfortable on the turn based, high level map than I am in the battle screens. Same thing with Civilisation (I-VI). Thinking about it – it’s probably why I’ve fallen back on turn based table-top games where I can attempt to keep track of everything going on. Doesn’t stop one screaming as soon as the turn is declared… Read more »
Can’t wait for this! I just hope my machine can do it justice *fingers crossed*
To be honest, I am not even remotely optimistic about this being a good DoW game. A decent RTS overall it may very well be, but it just isn’t feeling like a DoW game to me. This title looks to be missing many of the features (cover system, kill animations, building cover, multilayer game models, ect.) that I have come to expect in a DoW game to really have that classic feeling to it. Another issue I have is that the art design screams more Saturday morning cartoon than Grim Dark. The fact that there will only be a single… Read more »
