Mantic Games Begin Casting Resin Miniatures In-House

Mantic Games has announced that they're going to begin casting resin miniatures in-house for the first time and that means we're going to see some awesome creations coming our way soon we hope!
They have gone into detail about the process over on their website about how it all works, and it sounds like one of those processes where you need to have a bit of wizardry to get it right! Either way, it seems to be producing some rather nice miniatures including this Tree Herder for the Forces Of Nature in Kings Of War.
Now that is an awesome looking Treeman which really brings that sense of the 'wildwood' to the tabletop. I particularly like its eerie grin, stretched out across the bark and the spiky tendrils ready to reach out and crush your bones.

As unfashionable as this is, I really like Mantic. I like what they are trying to do and I believe that, as a company, they are generally moving forward and making progress. I believe that any inhouse casting, which allows them to 1) make larger models, 2) check the quality as models are produced and 3) become less reliant on outside entities is a good thing. I have given Mantic a lot of stick over the last few years but it is nice to see them progressing as a company. Their newer minis are great looking. Just wish their frog men, water elementals, snake riders and those cool crab things had been in plastic or resin. Would have definitely picked some up.

I don’t know, they seem to be doing well … so perhaps it isn’t all that unfashionable (but indeed, the internet is always filled with anger, rants and complaints!). Mantic is good for the industry … period. They have come in and offered minis at more reasonable prices, they offer a big range of minis that are useful with their own games and other companies games and their presence alone has changed behaviors around the industry for the better I think anyway. I fell out with them during the Warpath KS, but have nothing against them as a company. I think they make really good games, but need to stop relying on KS as much and focus on quality control.
Some of their newer models are gorgeous, though. That treeman for one!

Treeman thinks look a great ent subsitute. It would be good if mantic can get the quality and quality control up oh and sort the customer service. I must admit all out war stuff I have seen are good quality. hopefully a step in the right direction.
As a company they fustrate me, Ronnie has a wonderful enthusiam, they produce some decent games. However, they are too ks focused, support off is ks is pretty poor. Plus I have had massive issues with the afforementioned production quality to the point they are on my shitlist.
I’m not sure it’s unfashionable to like Mantic, or maybe it’s just the circles I move in. They are really coming on in leaps and bounds, too. As for their games I have a lot of love for Mars Attacks, Dungeon Saga and Dreadball. And Walking Dead and Deadzone2 are our most played games ATM. I agree that their minis have frequently been below-par but that is absolutely changing (and has never been a big thing for me anyway, being predominantly a gamer and not a collector/painter/hobbyist). This development can only be a good thing as well.
Mantic is a bit hit-and-miss for me. This treeman is serviceable but nothing more imo. Now those centaurs, on the other hand, were brilliant. Must have!
I belive they have been in house casting metals for a long time, and those truly are of variable quality. More than half of the metal castings I have gotten of theirs should not have passed QC, being horribly flashed, mold-slipped and so forth, It is as if they have not very good mould makers and/or run their moulds too long before retiring the moulds, or too hot, or something, and then not QCing properly, probably due to time constraints. Been a Dreadball covert for a while now (yes I bought the new BB as well…..because its BB), I just enjoy DB as a “sports” game (and can’t wait for the DB 2.0 KS to ship). One thing I would absolutely LOVE to see would be cleaned up series 1 to 3 DB minis in resin (so I don’t have to deal with that nasty restic ever again). Those old sculpts are still good, its just the choice of material that let them down, The DB series 4-6 minis were leaps and bounds better than the earlier offerings and after… Read more »

You’ll have to post on the WAYPN thread to let us know how the thing goes together and paints up. I’m a bit worried about that trident if thats in resin, perhaps a metal replacement might be in order for use on a gaming table 🙂
