Sneaky look at Dwarf King’s Hold Prototype
July 4, 2011 by lloyd
Andy and Jake Thornton Designer of Dwarf King’s Hold (yes he was the editor of White Dwarf when it was good) give you guys a look at the prototype of Dwarf King's Hold.
The final box set contains the tiled boards, 29 plastic Mantic miniatures, counters, dice and rules and we think it's great fun to play.
Watch out for a how to play video coming Sat 5 March 2011.
I think I know what I'm going to buy Warren for his birthday!

Why are the Skeletons not always made in white plastic?
Is it more expensive?
From what Jake told me it’s about the same.

For sure i will get one copy of this nice simple game.
I like Dungeon crawler games. My favorite is Dungeoneer. But maybe it will be replaced by DKH. 🙂
The how to play DKH video will be up tomorrow. 😀
Thanks Andy!!! 😀
I don’t know about anyone else, but I’ll probably be picking up all 3 starter boxes!!
I’m slightly disappointed… But only slightly. It’s really good, of course, but it’s just a Space Hulk with dwarves, really : action points, a team of five or six dwarves, some with special weapons, skeletons that are almost unlimited in numbers (theyr esurrect, as opposed to just being infinite in number)… Of course, the powers of both teams are different, so the gameplay is different, and there will be extensions, so it’s probably better than Space Hulk… And Space Hulk was really good ! Still… There’s no opportunity for people to play “à la” HeroQuest, with one character each, each… Read more »
Why not try writing an expansion that gives your take on the dungeon crawl using the boxed set as a toolkit?
Oh, I definitely will !
I mean, I’ll still buy the game : A Fantasy Space Hulk ? It’s too good to pass up…
I just wish there were official rules for that, not just my own home-cooking with my other minis…
But home cooking is the best, just like mum used to make!…. If only she made war games….
Not everyone likes that right away, adds effort to gameplay so just scares people out of the idea. Use this to entice new players then move them on to your space hulk and other rpg’s 🙂
It looks nice and seems an interesting game, I will decide to buy it or not depending on the general game mecanics, Andy, could you show us some of this games you played against Jake to see the overall feel of the game? (I liked it very much the way you did with warmachine and it is what made me realize what a great game i is)
Thanks.
We have a whole game filmed.
The whole thing takes 30 miinutes, including me explaining the rules!
A great little game. Perfect for a rainy afternoon or a night in with friends and a few beers.

If its space hulk with dwarves its a winner…I can see other uses for the parts as well- eg for RPG’s and Fantasy battles. An excellent Intro set, that can stand by itself
Are the tiles double sided?? Is there a painting guide for newcomers? I hope a Heroquest style expansion will be considered for those looking for a more RPG style game.
On the new Turn 8 Jake said the tiles were not double sided – he figured it would just be the same thing on the other side, so there was no need for it.
I would welcome some different looking art on the backside, but I guess you’d lose the whole Dwarf theme and it’d raise the cost of the game.
I would have welcomed different artwork as well ! here’s more than one way to draw an L shaped room in a dwarven dungeon, IMHO.
Always blame the dice Andy! 😛
Am so tempted to get a set but might have to wait awhile 🙁
Was thinking that if someone ran as a gamemaster they could place traps a la Hero Quest.
What’s the grid size on the tiles?
The squares are 25mm. You’ll see them today with based skeletons on them. The Skellie bases are the ones in the Mantic boxes, so they’re 25mm and fill a whole square.

Hey, that means you can use tiles from other sources… Yay !
Nice they’ll go along with my D&D tiles (and vice versa 🙂
It does seem like it’s going to be SH with Dwarfs, but still, is that a bad thing 😉
Looking very nice.
Lack of interlocking is a double edged sword, plenty of options, but.. it’s going to move during play.. suggest laying out on a tight baize to help stop movement
Still hope to pick up a copy.
A benefit of the single sided artwork is that you can bluetack the tiles down and not worry if it damages the bottom of the tile 🙂
Looks pretty interesting to me. Think I might grab a copy on advance order from Wayland. Plus the sweetner of the £5 Mantic voucher is a nice touch. (although I think Wayland mentioned that vouchers are a pain for online retailers). Anyways I echo some of the comments that say it seems like Spacehulk with Dwarves and Skellies, and that some folk were looking for a Hero quest type game. I for one like the way Jake has taken this. I am a painter at heart but always want to play a game so something that gives me the oportunity… Read more »
I’ve bitten. My order’s sitting with Wayland Games as we speak.
The fact that I can use the skellies as reinforcements for my existing undead horde (http://www.warseer.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=165) means it’s a no-brainer.
This kind of “light” wargaming which is quick, fun and simple without loads of detailed, pointless, confusing, finnicky rules to learn is really the kind of thing our group enjoys!
Hmm, Space Hulk with Dwarves would have been better if it had been Space Hulk with any fantasy figures you have, but I guess they are trying to sell their minis… Also Jake wasn’t the editor of WD when it was good because even then it wasn’t as good as in ‘the good old days’ which is usually 5 to 10 years earlier. If there’s no Thrud in it then it’s ‘new fangled’ WD. For me, 29 minis isn’t enough to get excited about these days. Especially when the enemies are undead which I still equate as cheaper minis due… Read more »
If anyone is interested I’ve written a review of DKH on my blog and I have to say I really enjoy it:

Our hobby needs more entry point products like this for younger kids and new comers alike. However after playing it for a while now the game has hidden depths it really does, so us grizzled veterans will find enough to keep coming back to.
Loving the Dwarven love! 😀
