Dwarf Kings Hold… first look at what’s in the box!
February 24, 2011 by beerogre
Here it is guys... for those who have been waiting for what seems like forever. The contents of the Dwarf Kings Hold boardgame has finally been revealed... and here it is!
Does this look like it's going to be fun or what?
There looks like there's going to be some scope for customisation, in that there are some connecting pieces that can be swapped about and a few fun little counters to add some detail to the game.
I'm really looking forward to having a go at this game... I wonder if you can use your own dungeons for it?
We've got a cracking modular dungeon here at the studio that we'll have to show you sometime. This game would look really good on that.
It's also difficult to see if the tiles are double sided... here's hoping!
Finally... we have the exclusive first look at the front of the box...
That's some nice art, it reminds me of the old 80's style boxes, but with a new millennium sheen.
Dwarf Kings Hold £31.00
What do you think guys? Does this get the gaming juices flowing?

Clean up on isle three…
WOW….. Flat out wow.
Can;t wait to haer how it actually plays. I was hoping for a Heroquest replacement, but this sounds more like a straight up battle game.
Still, I’m in…
£31 + £5 for the new underwear I now need, and its still a bargain!
Looks cool! But I am going to wait until I see a review or two before I will decide to buy it or not.
I’m waiting for a review… But the contents look cool ! The cover art dwarf from the eighties looks like crap, though.
Cover art looks good to me 🙂
+1 on the box cover it’s old skooll baby ;P
It has a certain cachet, like a dirty glass in a tourist bar for that “authentic touch”…
lol
Doesn’t look too bad, and no disrespect to the guys who produced the tiles, but I reckon they could really have raised the bar by doing a collaboration with Worldworksgames (WWG), similar to the project between WWG and Wyrd for Malifaux terrain.
Still considering buying the game but I will probably make my own tiles/board with this:

Bring on the game review!!
What do you print the Worldworks PDFs on? Standard photocopier paper or thicker stock?
I usually use cardstock. Paper wouldn’t last very long (especially with the typical gaming krew!!) and wouldn’t provide enough strength for certain items. Another option would be photo paper, but that can be expensive. Floor tiles would usually be cardstock or A4 label paper (self adhesive) mounted onto artboard or foamcore. I know a bunch of guys from the WWG forums are planning to make their own tiles for this game.
Good idea on the self adhesive onto foamcore – I’ll be stealing that! 🙂
nice input and very much needed 🙂
Do we know how many undead/dwarf models come in the box? Also are the models the standard Kings of War models or special designs made just for the game?
That looks like a lot of models to come with a 35 quid starter set nowadays, looks like 10 dwarfs and 20 Skeletons? I just hope the rules allow the other dwarf models to be used, or maybe that’s for an expansion pack. 🙂
If you are correct Cazbob, minimum cost of figures is £22
so that is 12 quid for rules tiles and dice
what a rip off…
a lot of people wanting to rip the lid off the box that is!
the tiles seem a bit brighter with more color than other dungeon games I have. I kinda like that for some reason.
I would’ve liked the tiles to interlock though, like The castle Ravenloft board game, or, as Shinobi pointed out the World Works stuff.
Looks like it will be fun, hopefully I can get my paws on a box.
Just wondering, looking at the pics again if the tiles are laid out as you move along and get LoS a la fog of war.
maybe not as the game mechanics would be tricky I guess, but it would be cool imho
If the rules don’t allow it house rule it, play test and if it works let Mantic know …. it may make the first expansion 🙂
Very nice, although I can’t help but thing it’s a fantasy space hulk. I know it’s not but…
So what if it’s a fantasy Space Hulk? So what if it’s Mantic’s take on Quest? Does it look good? Yes … Does it look good value for money? Yes …. Are the rules any good? We don’t know yet but even if they were the worst dross the gaming world has ever seen you can always use the game contents in Quest, D&D, Space Hulk, Necromunda, Mordheim or squad sized games of 40k or WHFB or heaven forbid use your imagination and make something up ….. Oh and it’s released close to my birthday so all in all well… Read more »
Isn’t it ab bit boring just to fight skeletons with dwarfs? Other Games have at least one special Unit or Boss. A Mix of Zombies and skeletons would have been nicer and maybe a necromancer as Boss. I have to admit I’m not the biggest mantic dwarf fan either. I dont like the look of them. The dungeon itself looks good to me.
Flog the dwarves and add some special characters yourself, shouldn’t be that hard to tweak a statline …. 🙂
BTW anyone notice this line in the latest blog :-
“In the next month or two we’ll be moving to a bigger location with our own casting equipment.”
interesting …..
Brighter is better. On the other games I’ve seen, it’s hard to make out the details on the board.
Interlocking tiles are MUCH better than not.
A World Works crossover might be cool with their new set up. Not sure if I’d do it as my projects are piling up unfinished already.
🙁
No new Minis. Just the standard sprues.
But it looks great. 😀
mantic have already said there is going to be at least 2 expansions for this game, so hopefully new rules will come along, but lets see these rules first before we pass judgement eh?
Looking good.. Yes, shame there isn’t a greater variation of enemy but none the less it does look good, hope it’s fun to play ‘cos I’m going to have to have a copy 🙂
Just seen that game designer Jake Thorton is giving an exclusive interview/review to some website or other, Wonder who that could be? *thinks*
Look forward to seeing the video chaps!
Ya, ive been looking for a good board game that doesnt require atleast an hour of setup and break down…
I am looking real hard at this one good find BOW 🙂
I’ll definitely pick this up, should be a great game to play with the family.
Must have shiney things…ok what can I sell to pick this one up
Looks really nice, I’m thinking about getting the set when it is released!! 😀
