Cheers @johnlyons always a joy – and the Pz IV in T34 numbers (OK it where Germans not Russians but you know what I mean) should send shiver down and Allied commanders spine
How about a Bob Ross opening next time? Happy trees!
Happy panzers!
“Enough innuendo” NEVER!
Excellent stuff @johnlyons
any chance you could do something on the use of weathering powders?
I can’t get a decent look with them at all.
I usually use paint to piant rust instead of specialized products, but this looks good, and easier. How do you make it so that the pigment doesn’t fall off or isn’t wiped away ? Spray varnish ? Brush-on varnish tends to change the texture…
It really depends on what product and how you apply it. I find that Mig’s Pigment fixer then a layer of Vallejo Matt varnish does the trick, if it dulls the effect then you can apply more pigment on a second layer and repeat the process.
Thanks for the tip !
Spray matte varnish works on some pigments but not all of them, and you’ve got to be careful not to blow them away (if there’s a lot).
the sprays work best on secret weapon pigments, they have a more coarse powder which is more likely to retain its colour with a layer of varnish, Mig’s are ideally suited to just a layer of pigment fixer, since they are a product more suited to display models rather than gaming miniatures.
I sometimes apply pigment diluted in Daler Rowney soluble Matt varnish. Depending on how much varnish you use you can control the desired effect plus get a fixer and varnish in one… But pigments really are a pain in the back side when it comes to protecting the achieved effect on a gaming piece. Thank you for the tips, I should get some secret weapon pigments.
Never tried the MIG pigment washes… Can they survive a spray varnish?
A great little video, I’m really loving these Tank God Vid’s.
I tend to use mig pigments a lot, I usually mix it with a bit of enamel thinners into a paste and paint it on, when it’s dry you can rub some of the pigment off leaving it in the nooks and crannies, looks good on tank tracks with the mud and dust colour pigments.
I’ve only tried rust a couple of times and on much smaller areas using Modelmates Rust Effect. I’m not sure how that stuff would look on a bigger area like an exhaust but it’s pretty impressive stuff and the easiest thing to use in the world. Paint it on, leave it 30 seconds, done. When it dries it leaves a nice variety in tone and if you don’t like it, you just get a damp brush and wipe it off.
Might have to pick up some of these MIG pigments though, ready for when my T34 arrives…
Good stuff. I’m trying out testors oil paints over acrylics for my rust effects. Much better than acrylic over acrylic; you don’t get pools of colour around the edges like you would with watered-down acrylics. I’ll try powders next, starting with some dirt around the tracks.
I’m finding the difficulty with rust effects is to know the difference between being too subtle and making a rust-bucket.
Never used rust effects myself, great vid!
Im actualy starting to paint my first Tank, a chaos Rhino Ive heavily converted, and a great tip I got from this is to bear in mind the weathering effects on rust.
Tanks !
nice vid John, i use the same effect on my post apocalyptic vehicles (cars/trucks) i use a lot of AK interactive products and MIG productions, both are very good products,
cheers

I never tried specialized products but I’m happy I looked at your tutorial. Very interesting.
I developped a very simple rust technique using only paints. There’s a quick picture-tutorial on my army log here:

Tell me what you think!
Nice History spot BoW John! Thanks for that , very cool indeed. I’m particularly fond of early Twentieth Century History and I don’t know enough about the campaigns fought in Africa and the old Russian Empire. WWII gaming and I guess WWI too always seem like the proper thing, ( proper grown up gaming. A little too grown up for me as yet but maybe once I’m old and crusty enough and in my slippers and dressing gown/ smoking jacket: probably in a couple of years time at the rate I’m going…lolz) Also that specialised rust painting stuff might be… Read more »
happyhowler,…….that is a great rust effect you have there mate, and you know why? because it is so simple! cheers for sharing that mate.
