Hey John, have you thought about giving it a quick blast of matte varnish then adding a little paint to the liquid mask (or even use a coloured mask)? I always find it a royal PITA to track down smaller pieces of clear mask that did not come away properly..
Personally i would only use liquid mask on flat surfaces, to much of a ball ache trying to get it out of all the nooks and crannies, genuine silly putty would be my masking tool of choice here, or 2 or 3mm tamiya tape
@johnlyons tamiya is alcohol based acrylics, you can avoid paying over the odds for x20a thinner, by using isopropyl alcohol. The clear paints in the range are pretty much just gloss medium with a coloured ink in it. The reason tamiya sprays so nicely is again the alcohol as it evapourates very quickly and atomises to a finer particle, i tend to add a drop or 2 of isopropyl (as well as thinner) to any normal paint i put through my air brushes i.e. GW, Vallejo Model/Game Color, P3 and especially AP as its so pigment heavy a paint, as… Read more »
If anyone is after some IPA (Isopropyl Alcohol)

Some pharmacists carry it too, you dont want surgical spirit though as it has additives you dont want
clever and imaginative. the effects paint created a very rich orange with a unique look that works real nice.
cool thing about this tutorial is that at every stage I felt you could just go with as is.
you definitely need a studio PHR fleet, they’d look magnificent, and i’d love to see you refine the technique.
i’ll be giving that liquid mask of yours a whirl as well.
@johnlyons Think I may have to steal this colour scheme! It looks gorgeous! May I ask what the thinning ratio you used for the tamia clear is please?
@biggrim typically with tamiya to airbrush you do a 1:2 or 1:1 thinner to paint, although the clear stuff is pretty thin to begin with you can often spray it without dilution, as long as you dont have a tiny needle in the brush i.e. its .3mm+
@nakchak Cheers!
loving the look of this, are we going to see tutorials for the other factions. I may have accidentally picked up 3 fleets and I need inspiration 😉
Its no accident that you picked up 3 fleets.
They’re so awesome that you just find yourself compelled to buy them!
I know I did, and I’m with you on wanting to see more tutorials on painting the Dropfleet ships.
I think the accident was that @avernos did not pick a 4th fleet as well 😉
Great stuff – looking at doing some thing like this but candy red
I’m thinkin’ the same for my Scourge. Been planning them a long time. Gonna have em silver with stippled bands of tin bitz before the red goes on.
the end result looks stunning john.
Excellent paint job, although the colour is not really to my taste but then again I am not a massive fan of the PHR ship 😉

Cracking piece John. Did you have much trouble removing the masking fluid? I’ve found I have to put a gloss coat down before I’d even consider using the stuff. It’s too easy to damage the paint underneath. I’d echo @nakchak‘s point regarding using silly putty or Tamiya tape.
I found that warm water helped loosen it.
Great job. The one thing that I kept seeing and i am not sure if it is the camera or lighting or even my eyes, was there a bit of orange peel to the clear coat? If so do you think there is a way to get rid of it?
Cool tutorial John 🙂
I was wondering, may you suggest a combo airbrush / air tank / compressor that can be used by a beginner? not huge budget restriction 🙂
