Every good painter knows this is the brand of choice to go for. Compared to citadel you get 17 ml bottles instead of 12ml, a bigger range at a better price so you can’t argue with simple mathematics. I personally love their washes and inks range although they don’t have an equivalent to devlan mud wash.

I have to totally agree with this! I bought the whole Game Colo(u)r (sorry but I cannot stand Amercanised English) and saved myself a huge amount of money compared to Citadel. I have found since starting my Vamp Counts army if found the coverage is better compared to Citadel. The washes and inks are amazing (but Devlan mud or whatever it’s called now rules) and the model air metallics are the most superior metallics out there! Grey Primer smells though! I have now totally moved over to Vallejo!

This range does sell itself on many levels as far as I am concerned. Firstly price per quantity. Then there is the huge range of available shades and tones. I really like the lack of mess that you always get with the GW containers and because there is no sealing issue the paints do not expire to a solid mess if left long periods between use. All in all there is little not to like here. They really are good paints.

That model air Aluminum is the best damn silver I have ever used. I don’t care for the model color range very much because of the latex base, but those model air metals are dreamy, even with a normal brush.

I hope you review reaper master series paints sometime soon. I know they are as rare in Europe as Coat’d’Arms paints are here in America, but I find them very unique in their flow and blending properties.

Most of the paints I use are Vallejo paints and I’m happy with them. Yes sometimes if I haven’t used the paint for some time the small amount in the drop end will dry and clog the flow. All I do is prick it with a pin and it’s good to go. The coverage of many is second to none and I like that they have such a large range. The only thing I was somewhat let down on was the washes I got. It would leave a milky white film over some areas. Mainly where the wash would pool.… Read more »

It can be two things…

Either a bad batch (in which case there’s nothing to do), or simply lack of proper shaking or mixing of the paint.

I hope it’s the latter !

You know, I prefer the texture of P3…
Vallejo is very good indeed, but it’s not the be all and end all of paints.
There are great colors in most brands !

Nice review! For me Vallejo wins hands down for my choice of paint because it’s cheaper for more (double bargain!) and in a better pot than the “other” paint without compromising quality, (in fact I’d say the model colour range is better quality than a certain well known brand) but on top of that it’s easier to get. I’m in Glasgow and in the city centre there is one GW stockist (GW funnily enough) vs three (that I know of, there could be more) stockists of Vallejo. There are paint kits for all 3 kind of paints (glassic/game/air) at prince august with 71+ colors and brushes. I suppose it’s available under the name vallejo too. There are also many smaller themed paint kits, with 12 or 6 pots.

@ Romain : have you ever found any utility to the fluo paints ? Maybe for glowing effect ? I’m a bit sceptical about those…

As a matter of fact, I really like the fluo paints ! The fluo magenta and yellow are my favored colors (mixed or separate) for magical and fire effects, as well as source lighting of that sort of color. I also use the magenta fluo, mixed with red, to really bring out the highlights of brighht red cloth. I almost always use fluo colors for the eyes of big monsters. It’d be foolish to buy the hundreds and hundreds of references in one go… To the best of my knowledge, there are a lot of themed paint sets for all ranges, and one “Mega paint set” for all the Game Color references (about 70).
Peruse through the Vallejo website, it’s in english as well as spanish !

Given that Romain has been reviewing different paints and painting products on a regular basis I would allay any worries about conspiracy theories.

The most recent ranges are the expanded Panzer Aces range in individual pots, the Washes, and the Extra Opaque paints.
The Plastic Mastic is new-ish as well.
They always perfect their mixes, though…

Yes, those are basic colors in large bottles…
I thought these were more for decorative arts and crafts or traditional airbrush painting rather than miniatures, and the range is a bit tacky, but I guess you can use them nonetheless.
Vallejo does a lotof things aside from miniature paints and model accessories, you know…

There are some world-famous (…for painting toy soldiers ahem) painters that more or less only use GW and will swear by them, in fairness (though they can afford them).

But this video has sold me. I am investing in an air-brush because I can’t be asked to sit around like some chump spending 15 minutes basecoating a model when I could spend 20 seconds with an airbrush. These Vallejo air-brush paints are defo on my future shopping list.

I’ll be looking into some bundle deals for Vallejo paints as well. But Vallejo colour or model?

@poosh I’d say it depends on how you want to paint. If you want to follow a guide you’re best using Game seeing as most will reference GW colours. I find Model colour to be more heavily pigmented and covering. It’s like a 220 colour spectrum of foundation paints almost so they are a good choice for colours you might use to base coat; although they can be used for anything, I use Ivory quite a lot for an almost white highlight. Personally though I’ve used the vallejo paints, I have found the seperation problem. I have a grey model colour which is particularly bad. Even after *really* shaking it, it goes onto the pallette ok, then starts seperating on the pallette within seconds. Not good at all, but maybe a bad batch.

My local game store stocks Cote d’arms, which I’ve taken to lately.

Some old pots do tend to separate, but recent batches don’t have that problem…
However, since the shelf life of Vallejo pots is quasi infinite, those ones still are on the shelves of some stores !
Coat d’Arms have liquid pigments, so they rarely separate… I do like them, even though they’re a bit too flowy for my taste.

actually shaking is not the best way to mixing these, Squize the bottom to break up any build up and than “twist” them. giving them a short shake once in a while during
like when you would with a stick if you were to try to make fire with sticks.
the rotating motion does a way better trick then shaking them alone.

Thanks for the review, i had a bad experience painting necrons, i tried the Game Color Paint – Mithril Silver – 72052 and it had the “glitter” effect. I am still curious to try a few of their paints, but for now i prefer my reaper paints (plus im from texas so they are my home team!)

if you are not sattisfied with the metallic effect from the gamecolor range, they did upgrade it recently, finer metallic i think.

but me, i’m a fan of using the model air range metallics, they cover incredibly well and no glitter

actually vallejo model air paints are not diluted, they are simply not as viscous as the rest of the range (for obvious reasons).

the science and the range of paints has come a long way since airfix or revel enamels. I had a gaming shop and the Revel range was one of the biggest sellers, we also stocked vallejo and GW. No matter how hard I tried I found it a real hard to move stock. Yet when I spoke to so many gamers they would complain on the GW range. I have used most makes in the well over forty years and come back to both Vallejo and Revel enamels.
