A short lesson in anatony, some philosophical pondering and a painting guide for dark flesh. Romain you’ve really outdone yourself. Superb! Now where did I put that box of Perry Miniatures Sudanese?
I think the reason why people tend to paint light flesh tones, is that dark flesh really needs to be painted by shading to look convincing. Lighter flesh can be more “forgiving” for an aspiring painter.
I don’t know… I think it’s easier because the great occidental painting tradition has generated pre-mixed “flesh” colors that correspond to “caucasian” tones, or something like that… When you think about it, this off-pink-beige really has no other reason to be produced “en masse”. People don’t know where to start when painting black people, they don’t want to feel racist by painting them with “leather” or “chocolate” colors, nor do they want silly “color quotas” in fantasy games… Perhaps that’s also because many wargamers or painters are caucasian… Or at least they used to be for a long time. I… Read more »
another insight thanks. I would never have thought to give any of my models hairy legs until now.
Why ?
Do you shave your legs ?
Again, the golden rule : Observation, Observation, Observation.
I’ve spent way too much time looking at men’s legs. Among other things.
BoW Romain
Salamanders are the chapter made up of mostly – well I think all Black guys. I tend to paint a few of my marines and marauders in Warhammer in these colours just to mix it up a little bit.

I’m glad you covered skin tones that are not caucasian. I like painting other skin tones but do have a hard time matching with some tones. I did a few asian styled models and had a hard time making them tanned but not look like south american. As for black I do use chocolate from the vallajo range and it looks not as good as your but I do think its getting ther.
Great video, I’m looking forward to the next part.
Romain I ain’t going to ask why you look at mens legs alot hehe 🙂
I once saw a guy who gave his giant hairy armpits and I thought why, but they way you put it why not? I mean its what we have unless you shave and well…I don’t see giants the type to shave there pits.
You kinda have given me a whole new thought process on painting flesh now. Thanks mate 🙂
Thanks for the compliment !
I may do a tutorial on how to paint body hair… But that’s not high on the list of priorities, lol…
BoW Romain
Reaper Mini has some great skins triads… (Shadow, Skin, Highlight) Everything from Fair Skin, Olive Skin, including Dark Skin…. I have used most of them when painting my flesh tones… works great.
Ah yes… Reaper isn’t too common in stores though.
Andrea has a few tones, and Foundry as well…
It’s still pretty much unheard of for fantasy ranges, and only done by companies that appeal to historical painters… Idrian flesh is the darkest I’ve found, and it’s fairly recent, from P3.
Great tutorial though! I too would have bot thought about painting hair on legs, etc… something to think about for the future
nice he would make a good African Conan.
