The more I thought about this I think I came up with a small tip that might help with the very thin lines. You could spray a gloss varnish that could give you some small amount of time to wipe off any mistakes without damaging the paint before. Also some model pens are super thin and could do the dark lines.
You can wipe off your mistakes even without varnish, but it’s a nice tip… I would certainly use it if I had the patience to wait until it all dries. As it is, the lines aren’t impossibly thin… Just scale the tartan to what you can do, and use a very fine brush, such as the one you’d use for eyes and other extra-fine details. As for felt tip pens (the only kind I’d dare use on a miniature, any other would scratch it…), they don’t use paint, just ink… It’s usually glossy, and it does NOT age well on… Read more »
Thanks Romain, you may have saved a model or two from my experimenting. Im going to practice my brush work first for those thin lines.
BTW the tip for yellow is great. I always have a hard time with it being to translucent.
Thank you for your interest !
If you still want the yellow to be more “yellow” and less clear, just wash it afterwards with your pure yellow, which is slightly transparent, but should tint your mix well.

That is one of the collest videos to date. Cheers Romain
Thanks a lot ! I try. Another advice I will give to those attempting tartan is that, for the lighter and clearer lines (especially the thicker ones, but all of them really) you can actually do them in a slightly darker color, and then highlight them where they should be lit. It’s altogether better for most patterns, but it wasn’t too necessary on this one for two reasons : First, it’s just thebasics… Second, I used the brown to shade all the pleats after tracing the lines, and the light yellow took to it better than expected, so I didn’t… Read more »
yet another great vid keep up the great work
I’d like to second @manpug your tip for yellow was an added bonus.
Looking foward to Andy’s sporran special

Romain, a well presented tutorial on “How to do Tartan”. I know i`m about 4 year`s behind, but i always say……..Better Late Than Never.
As i have only just watched the 3 videos, i think i`ll watch them a few more time`s before i start on William and the Boys. In this way the “How To” will still be fresh in the old grey matter, and i won`t need to keep going back to remind myself………………….
