God I’m 5 mins in and I can’t stop laughing lol
Justin you are a hero my boy for volunteering for this, forget anyone else I think this series should only be about your collection 😉
done, at least i get some nice minis at the end 😛
I’ll have plenty to choose from… Don’t you have some apalling Khador or Menoth too, Justin ?
But please, people, if you want to volunteer miniatures from your collection, or even something “pro painted” (read : “shat upon”) from e-bay, don’t hesitate to contact us !
Oh no, no, no…
I think Romain should definitely be taking a trip through the studio miniature collections. It is important that we see a full range of your abilities and hear the full range of Romain’s available critique. Also I’m hoping for the final video where the calm expression displayed here finally cracks under the strain and stuff gets broken ;-).
Besides, I imagine Romain is going to eventually struggle for new expressions of distaste just sticking to Justin’s miniatures. Though there was admittedly no sign of that slowing down in this video…
Loving that start!!!
Romain is a legend 🙂
To be fair to Justin – we all have minis kicking about like that but I know I’m not brave enough to have then plastered for all the world to see.
Very true. I have some old Guardsmen models that I shudder to look at now. (“What’s a highlight?”)
Even though I have improved greatly since then I would still be nervous to show them to the world.
Amen, @mbbelius . I have some old Soviet vehicles from years ago that I’m embarrassed to bring out, but they keep coming out on the table because their game values make them indispensable. 🙁
I don’t think even Romain could save these things. One of these days I’ll just buy news ones and replace them.
I’ve not seen the vid yet but I’m already laughing at the thought of Romains comments.
This is the funniest thing I’ve seen on this site in ages. Well done Justin for having the cojones to subject your work to such scorn! 🙂
Thanks ! I’m a Frenchman, it helps.
Justin was actually in the studio while we were filming this, working on something else. I’m just mean, sometimes…
Ha! I did wonder if he was filming it … and grinding his teeth
Loved it, informative and well put together.
Romains wit is keener than his exacto knife.
Believe it or not I’ve seen worse minis. I’m sure my friend paints that bad in order to put me off my games with him.
Thanks !
I believe you…
Sweet merciful Cthulhu Justin…what in the world did you do to Kara?
That was pretty entertaining. Romain certainly has a higher tolerance than I do.
1st model: 2 days in Simple Green, maybe 3.
2nd model: 5 to 6 days in Simple Green.
3rd model: A minimum of two weeks in Simple Green and a flogging for Justin.
I enjoyed it and cant wait for more, Justin – i disagree with roman, Great painting Justin Nothing to be shamed of! not everyone have skills and gift to paint like pro so well done mate and roman you are not that good as you think you are I bet you have been bullied at school and you are doing same shame yourself!
I’ll be the first to say that I’m no master painter… but this sort fo thing is still 1% talent and 99% work. Like, say, the English language. It all can be acquired, and I have honestly NEVER seen someone who can’t get better at painting if he wants to. Justin already has made big progress since the time he painted those. When he really tries, he can do it. I have, however, seen a lot of quitters who say “I could never do that… oh well, not everyone can do this.” But, hey, you may be the first to… Read more »
I’m not sure if he is trying to be sarcastic and failed to convey that or if he is just having a bad day… Anyway, I think part of the problem with people quitting is that they strive for those Golden Daemon-level paint jobs by applying too many advance techniques too quickly. Then when their first attempt or two ends up being a mess they decide it isn’t worth it. It is what happened to me for a while when I tried to get good at painting. I’ve found that if I let go of one “crutch” (ex: precise mixes,… Read more »
Indeed… and we live in a culture of “I want it all and I want it now”… Learning to paint really really well (let alone being a master) is something that takes time, patience and dedication. It’s immensely gratifying, it focuses you like nothing else, it’s creative… but it’s also quiet, indoors, slow paced, and it requires that you sit for hours at a time. It’s always possible to learn that skill set, but it’s clearly not for everyone !
I fully agree on the perspiration part. Apart from people with actual disabilities (e.g. rheumatism, neurological damage), anyone can learn to paint if they put their mind to it. And practice, practice, practice. If you lack fashion sense, you can always paint Napoleonics. But it’s also about knowing what you want. Paint to please yourself, not others. 30-minute troopers and even dipjobs have their place if you’re happy with them. The larger the units and the smaller the scale, the more it is about creating an impression rather than actual precision or detail. Have realistic expectations. If you need to… Read more »
I agree… but I’m sure one can do better than Justin ! 🙂
@maxxon says: If you lack fashion sense, you can always paint Napoleonics.
Epic. 😀
That one made me laugh too
That, and “inflatable companionship.” One of those posts you wish you could give more than one +1 to. 🙂
Heh, +1 from me as well.
This video could only have been improved with a split screen, with the other camera shot showing Justin watching on.
Justin your a real star for owning up to these.
Great video as usual. Justin you are a brave man putting your minis up for the world to see and a certain Frenchman to critique! We all have minis like this that haven’t seen the light of day so it’s good to know they can be salvaged. Can’t wait for the next episode.
That was beautiful Romain, your opening letting us know you will be abusing Justin, oh and as an aside fixing his painting was perfect. I have not laughed this much since I watched the U-Tube vid on how to paint to win a Golden Demon…..
please Romain, more of this style of video would be wonderful.
Thumbs up Justin for being the punching bag, you always take stick for your painting and its great to see you continuing to be a good sport.
Romain, a please watching you work as always. I can’t wait for more.
This was a hilarious video. “Superman look,” “base coat with his feet,” the cracks on the green goggles, etc.
Amazing how Romain can fix the miniature to look 100% better ALREADY, and we haven’t even seen the second half of the miniature yet. This may already be done, but a split-screen finale shot of the “before and after” would be great.
I was literally crying with laughter watching this, thank you for making an otherwise terrible day end on a high!!
My stand out moment was undoubtedly your presumption that Justin base coated a figure with his feet!!! Now there is a hobby lab video I’d like to see
What is the liquid in the jar? and why put it in there?
1) Doom liquid
2) For it to be doomed!
😉
It’s the sin bin. It’s concentrated sin, distilled with a bit of horrible, horrible angst.
Have you ever stripped a miniature ?
I’d be curious to know what that mix is, unless it’s a weapon of mass destruction or Level IV biohazard or something. Like I said above, I have a few vehicles that are probably ready for the “miniature toilet” myself. 😐
Giving out recipes is useless… if I tell you to get a certain brand, I can’t be sure it will have the proper ingredients in your home country !
Since you’re in the US, you can get SImple Green. It is non-toxic and strips metal miniatures very well. Home Depot sells it by the gallons. If it is plastic, it may have trouble getting some of the paint out of the deeper recesses but will still do an overall good job. Resin is hit or miss…mostly because resin varies so much though. I tend to let the mini soak for a good day or two and then try scraping off the paint with either an old toothbrush or something a bit harsher if it is metal. If there is… Read more »
Awesome. Thanks @deadjesterx . Old and busted ISU-152s . . . prepare thyselves for the dip of doom!
Im happy everyone is enjoying this, but just wait till you see the finished mini, i was amazed by how well she turned out at the end. 🙂
Flatterer ! 🙂
I haven’t laughed so hard in ages! The look on Romain’s face when he was putting the model in the sin bin. A very funny yet very informative video 🙂 I think I should also echo the sentiment and congratulate Justin for being brave enough to volunteer some of his minis. Not sure I would have done the same.
Romains’ wit makes him so funny. Especially whilst he pours a torrent of shit on Justin with only mild subtlety
“Mild mannered” is me ! 🙂
hah love it =)
When I heard Romain say ‘this coat was painted by Justin’s feet probably’ that was it, I was cracking up for the rest of the video. I had to watch it twice to hear what I had missed because of laughing so much. Anyhoo, very good video. It has given me some inspiration to look at some of my many meh paint jobs to see if I can salvage them. Many thanks to Romain and Justin.
Justin indeed rolls with the punches on a lot of previous videos re: his painting, I’m starting to think he likes the attention! 🙂 One more word for Justin the Great here: I do a very, very small amount of very basic video editing here at work, and all I can say that s*** is a helluva lot harder than a lot of people think. I’ve spent 12 hours trying to splice together a 5-minute montage, and I’m sure most (if not all) of these BoW videos look as great as they do because of Justin’s work. Should the next… Read more »
at the phrase “Oh god it’s fizzing” I had to stop the video and try and learn to breath again.
Funniest thing I’ve heard in a while, all said with the deadpan expression.
Well done guys.
Poor Justin! We all have that box of minis we would rather forget about. But I have to agree this was very funny.
Completly agree with all the comments here about improving your painting. I did fall into that hole of if its not to Golden Demon standard then its rubbish. I’m talking about my own models here but I soon realised that to own an army of that standard is impossible!! I’ve taken the time to watch videos like this and others on youtube to get the basic techniques down – its amazing the progress you can make by just following those simple rules that Romain talks about – thinning paint down and building up the colour in incremental steps – for… Read more »
Wonderfully entertaining, highly informative and a glorious reminder to keep both feet on the ground and to remember that most of us are doing this for fun. Chapeau, chère Romain. C’est un véritable plaisir, comme toujours. Looking forward to the sequel.
Merci beaucoup ! 🙂
I’d like to see a 3 colours up vid on that ‘base coat with your feet technique’.
Great vid guys!!
