Games Workshop Painting Tutorial: Sector Imperialis Boards
July 21, 2014 by brennon
Games Workshop have broken out Duncan Rhodes once again to show you how to paint up those huge Sector Imperialis Realm of Battle Boards that just hit their webstore.
A neat and indeed quick and easy way to get your Realm of Battle Board sorted out I'd say. What do you think of this one for painting up an urban landscape?

Oooohhhh @Lloyd you’ve got some hobby lab competition!
(fixed 😉 – BoW Ben)
@reganspor LOL I’m having a watch right now 🙂
Got to have a look at this up close at the 40k open day, its weird, some bits work really well, others… Not so much.
I can’t afford to buy the board and paints. TBH I can’t afford my mortgage payment and the board.
Why are there arcways on the ground? Seriously, it just looks stupid. If you’re going to put some kind iconography on the ground, or a broken vault full of skulls for some reason, why would you shape it like a door? Make it round or hexagonal or something. You know how those archways look? They look lazy. They look GW took the wall designs they already had, threw them haphazardly on the ground, filled one will skulls and called it a night before sending this thing off to be produced. And the “sidewalks” too. They don’t look futuristic or gothic.… Read more »
I did not even realise it was supposed to be a pavement, I can’t call it a sidewalk. How is anyone supposed to walk on that, it looks like a cattle grid.
I’m going to play devils advocate here and say that the arches on the ground are actually more similar to when you see grave stones laid down flat in churches. So these are obviously memorial slabs or mass graves (hence all the skulls).
We’ve already had comments about how crappy the board is, I’m just going yo talk about the video as a painting tutorial. I really like what GW are doing with these videos. Duncan’s presenting style is nice to watch and it’s good to see basic techniques so well explained and demonstrated. Yes, they are aimed at beginners and veteran painters may not learn a lot from watching them, but they are great for showing people how to turn their grey armies into painted minis of a good tabletop standard.
Board is awful though.
Only 2 different board designs?
I like the guy’s presentation and tips, I’ve watched a few of these and I think he does a really good job – I can’t say I’ll ever understand the appeal of the 40k aesthetic though, but I’m sure many people don’t get the appeal of my tastes either so each to their own, eh? 🙂
not a fan of this set. The other ones they have have done were decent enough but this one is just horrible
Thank god we not HAVE TO us only GW paints. the board it sellf is not cheap…Lets add 20 pots of paints aswhell to the bill.
How to Paintjob and the board are nice
First time i see a Non-GW product being use in GW painting tutorial… i’m very confuse O.o
Seriously, do they believe that anyone is gonna buy tons of their paints in order to paint that ?
“Bless the mind too small for doubt!”
Aside from that, nice tutorial, i don’t like the terrain much but the techniques are well explained.
That was a really good video – very helpful explanations, and very good to get a nice, clear look at the board too. The only thing I think was missing was something on varnishing the board at the end – which I presume you really ought to do to protect it. I presume he’s also painting over a black undercoat, although he didn’t actually say this. There are lots of lovely details on the board, which really makes it all the more tragic that the overall design is so poor. As mpopke says above, a bit of thought could have… Read more »
I saw this the other day, another great tutorial and I can’t but agree that using GW paints would add another £40 to the cost, easy 🙂 I have mixed feelings about it – to me it’s impractical which is the most important thing. Why can’t GW make products that cater to a wide range of customer needs, instead of this BS consumerist ‘we are the elite’ attitude they seem to have, like they’re the BMW or Mercedes of the miniature world, where parts and product cost far more than they really should. If GW covered all grounds they’d make… Read more »
Paints required … Hillarious
Am I the only one who every time hi put the paint brush to the board saw £ jump off the brush?
