Games Workshop Painting Tutorial: How To Paint An Ultramarine!
February 12, 2015 by brennon
Duncan Rhodes is back with a pretty good tutorial on how to paint up an Ultramarine Tactical Marine for Warhammer 40,000 by Games Workshop. Since these guys are the mainstay of the Imperium and the poster boys of the game it makes sense to have a tutorial up on how to paint them!
Interestingly although this one is all about power armour and you wouldn't think it's that interesting it does go into some really nifty techniques that could be applied to lots of other miniatures. His tips for painting parchment, highlighting the edges of armour and indeed getting a really easy glow effect for eyes are top notch.
Duncan even goes into detail about the best way to apply transfers and this is an entirely different method to the one I was taught from Airfix with a bowl of hot water! This way works really well and I think the final product looks awesome for a rank and file Space Marine.
Would you drybrush or edge highlight?

that s a great tuto. nice and simple. I am not new to the hobby but always enjoy watching a nice video tutorial. well done GW.
Love this dude, such great tutorials from him!
Good solid tutorials, failed to address the burning issue though. Which is how not to get terminally bored painting marines – tried everything and they are just so soul destroyingly boring to paint
the gold looks more like copper nice tutorial all the same.
@dags try ten at a time a bit longer but you have a full squad ready to go.
I did, it resulted in 10 part painted marines rather than 2 full painted. Don’t know what it is they are just dull to paint.
try doing it with a good film / CD get a wee production going just do one step at a time hopefully you will get further down the line? @dags
Thanks for the suggestions@zorg but I feel paint other stuff is probably the better option will try again when hobby vibe is singing
I agree, I don’t think I could paint them without a cd or something else to listen to while I do.
You’re right though, if you can’t face painting marines then you’re probably better off painting something else!
Lol
Agreed, I always put on some suitably dark and SF sounding industrial music, and it always puts me in the mood to paint.
Great video, thanks!
