Games Workshop Painting Tutorial: How To Paint The Baleful Realmgate
July 27, 2015 by brennon
Duncan Rhodes is back doing something a bit different for Age of Sigmar by Games Workshop this time. The newest video focuses on painting the Baleful Realmgate which is one of their new terrain pieces. He shows off some great techniques that would be simple to apply to your own hobbying...
I particularly like how he shows off the ways you can give metal that aged look using some of their technical paint and the bale fire that he has glowing within the archway itself.
What do you think of this new terrain?

Excellent all-round tutorial, good advice, for detailing terrain and everything else ! Quite interesting quick techniques, a great way to use the products featured… in spite of bad habits such as little dilution and ruining your brushes with dry-brushing and painting from the pot.
@elromanozo – I’m really bad at brush care, destroyed a new brush just last night 🙁
Awww…
Do you need advice ?
I think i do 🙂
There’s a tutorial in there… 🙂
Meanwhile, some general advice :
What NOT to do : Paint from the pot, let too much paint get on your brush (it should never reach the ferrule), dry brush with a new brush, leave brushes in the water goblet, store brushes with bristles against something, wash your brushes in anything but cold water (soap, hot water, detergent…)
What to do : rinse in cold water, re-make the point of your brush after use, store horizontally using the brush cap if possible, only dry brush with old brushes.
Anyone else here got the habit of using their mouth to reshape their paintbrush into a point after rinsing?
True story: I once did this on a brush in a GW store before I bought it to test its point. The guy in the shop gave me the weirdest look (understandably).
Lloyd you’re not alone, likewise I’m a proper brush murderer.
I take good new brushes as they walk home at night, have my way with them, then stuff them under the floorboards.
To be fair these tutorials have been very nice, pity the model it’s for is limited edition. Apparently all of the terrain sets being released for AoS are going to be limited runs.
They’re probably the best and most original-ish models in the range, too. I mean, we’ve seen those chaos models before (or if not exactly them, their very close blood brothers), and marines are marines… even though the Sigmarines are decent quality and properly armored, there’s hardly any variety between them.
Good to see some GW tutorials, I have watched a few of Duncan vids, which were pitched fantastically, turn the seemingly impossible into the possible. Still think AoS is sh!te though.
I do wonder how many of those fun size paint pots he needed to complete that gate
Just finished watching the tutorial, sorry GW I’ve had a pants day. Duncan your a legend, and the pot sizes are perfect for Infinity, Flames of War, Drop Zone Commander, Epic ect.
Those techniques are perfectly doable with any brand of paint… any brand with less expensive pots, or more paint in them, for example. If you need time or flexibility, just add some mixing medium for that GW consistency. And don’t forget to varnish afterwards; with something suitably matte or it will look like a toy.
“or it will look like a toy”. I have so much empathy with this sentiment. Spent 10+ years trying to make my toy soldiers not look like toys.
I really like these tutorials, Duncan makes everything looks so easy, using basic techniques he achieves fantastic results.
the gate looks good finished still don’t see me get one.
A good video. I’d love to see Romain tackle making and using glazes if he hasn’t already here on BoW.
Superb artist, clear tutorials and amazing results. GW are producing so good technical paints.
