It’s amazing how reassuring it is to hear you make the same little noises of concentration or annoyance that I make when trying to do something fiddly.
The guidelines are a brilliant idea that seems so obvious after it is pointed out. 🙂 Do you think that a layer of gloss would help the paint flow better during lettering, by making a smoother “writing surface”?

Nope, no gloss, no varnish of any kind. You need a porous surface for paint to adhere, preferably already highlighted and shaded (at least partially).
Thanks for that heads-up. It’s a bit counter-intuitive to me, but I see the sense in it.
When you think about it, varnish protects from splashes of water. Once dried, it’s hydrophobic and smooth as glass. Paint, as a water-based solution, doesn’t adhere much over it… well, it does if you keep at it a while and end up depositing a few dried pigments, but it’d sooner make droplets and slide over at the consistency I’m working with. Matte varnish is more manageable, but gloss varnish and “gaming” varnishes that offer high protection are almost always very thick and much too smooth.
