Oh, now this one I will be watching with interest. I have had the most difficult time putting even the smallest amounts of yellow on models, even the nose squadron markings on German fighter squadrons (Jg-26) has been challenging with smooth application and coverage. Getting it to cover without “caking it on.” Thanks for the video, I already know it will be helpful! (I guess I should watch it now . . . 😀 )
Ah, yellow, my nemesis. We meet again.
Can never have enough yellow tutorials. Thanks Romain, very helpful.
Thank you for the comment about black tending to turn the yellows dirty, muddy and green. I’ve had that exact experience but didn’t know why. Now that you’ve explained it, it makes so much sense. 🙂
@BoW Romain such a pleasure to watch you at work, thanks so much
So it really is that simple…
Very timely for me given I’ve just got the IS starter. Thank you!
@elromanozo have you mentioned how you clean your airbrush during a painting session in many other tutorials? On one of Jay Adan’s videos he mentioned using an old brush and some water / airbrush cleaner to clean out the cup and then tip the fluid out rather than flushing through your brush. You appear to be doing something similar. I came across this method fairly recently so I’ve not tested it too much yet.
Thanks a lot ! 🙂
Yes, that’s about it… Cleaning an airbrush is simply a matter of getting water to flow through it, using a brush to scrub it a bit, and using airbrush cleaner after that. Once you’re completely done with airbrushing for the day, you take it all apart and clean it piece by piece.
Very nice, clean yellow.
Makes me want to find something that I can do that way, my Yu Jing is closer to the typical orange-yellow that you mentioned in the beginning of the video – Scrofulus Brown is one of my all time favourite colours!
Thank you ! It’s even possible to push the contrast further, but you’d get something more “metallic”, then. It may not be one’s purpose. I recommend shading yellow with purple, when in doubt : mix in a bit of ruddy purple with the yellow, it’s the complementary colour, so you can’t go wrong with that, even if you add some black in it later.
Very timely – also have some Mercs models arrived today (from KS) that need to be similar…
Thank you very much for your wonderful compliments, guys ! The reception for these tutorials is always amazing… I’m just glad it’s useful ! 😀
I hadn’t heard of Angel Giraldez before you mentioned him. I see he put out a book, I’m assuming you recommend it, @elromanozo ?
His book is a wonderful insight at his technique and an excellent way for beginners to get into painting… he won’t present anything apart from his “style”, but he covers all the bases nonetheless. Half of the book will be lost to you if you don’t own an airbrush, though.
Thanks Romain, sounds interesting, I’ll have to check it out! I do own an airbrush, just a cheapo compressor and airbrush with a paint booth. Best little investment I’ve made!
Great tutorial and very helpful! And now one with red colour 🙂
Done ! 🙂
Thanks for the tutorial, yellow is the colour I have the most problems with, nice tips!
o roman you tease. you really know how to butter me up ,infinity and airbrushing. sorry it has taken me a couple of days to get here. just got myself an airbrush , should get chance to play in a week or so . I have rebuilt it a few times but not put any paint through it yet. have to learn my wax on wax off basics on paper before I do the fun stuff. knew a Chinese calligraphy gentlemen who said he had to spend one year just drawing circles before his teacher would let him do anything… Read more »
Oh, you know, I still own that chinese copy airbrush from an “El Cheapo” dealer I started with… It’s not as good as what we have in the studio, but it’s amply sufficient for what I’m demonstrating here (give or take a few sputters). And I only took it apart one or twice before painting with it… That’s part of it : if you’re not scared of ruining it, you’re much more adventurous with the thing ! 🙂 I think you’ve seen it, but I’ve done a “Jade armor” tutorial before, on a Stormcast Eternal. Watch out for a “Teal/turquoise… Read more »
Great tutorial! Would you do one for the onyx battle pack?
Thanks !
Unfortunately, I’m not sure at this point. But to tell you a secret, I’ve been drooling over the Onyx for a while now, and I’ll probably get them for myself ! If I can do an article about them, I most certainly will.
great video Romain will try to remember to use this when painting some Ork stuff.
thank you
