Superb, a wonderfully subtle job. More please Romain.
Thanks a lot ! I’m flattered !
I think I like this more subtle snow terrain scheme then her regular color scheme. The same could go for the whole of Khador. For a military presence in a land surrounded by cold and snow they don’t attempt to even try to blend into their surroundings nor play to the natural strengths of their terrain using similar schemes like the one you’ve managed here. That said I do like the slimming red and black she usually wears at a costume level I can see its appeal but I definitely prefer this for a battlefield / war type uniform, at… Read more »
I don’t know… Ask John about camouflage, it’s not my department. I just have taste. Camouflage would probably be useless, pretty much, considering there are no extremely long range weapons or bombardments in the Iron Kingdoms : a camouflage pattern would only be useful short range and mid-range. No point in trying to camouflage a warjack, considering the heat, light and noise it emits, and considering the sheer size of the thing. Anyway, this is Fantasy, so I’m allowed to do what I want… I’m glad you like it, though ! 🙂
That is true all things considered!
It could at least be used to disguise numbers and allow for ambush locations, at least for heavy infantry forces but you’re 100% about the warjacks. Hiding those would be awful!
I very much like this color scheme though, its a nice contrast to the harsh soviet red that is usually on display.
Camouflage isn’t your department? Instead you have taste? 😀 Epic.
Jacquie Onassis never wore camouflage, after all (unless there are photos out there I have NEVER seen. 🙂 )
Well, if she wore camouflage, you’re unlikely to have seen her.
But thanks for the kind words ! 🙂
I enjoyed it too.
I like coat, I have epic Sorcha to paint and possibly will paint is similar. As Khador player I would need more red on shoulder pads maybe or some subtle red on her chest armour – but it is your model and I respect that.
White Khador is a classic colour scheme… No red at all. It’s fairly common. Just because you “play Khador” doesn’t mean you HAVE to have red, really.
Just look at the first issues of No Quarter and the first edition books : alternate colour schemes galore for special companies, or even main ones ! So let’s spare the “oh, but it’s not true space marine chapter colours” discourse, because it has no place in the Iron Kingdoms.
And remember the Privateer Press motto : Paint like you’ve got a pair ! 🙂
oh I do agree – my grey knights are white for instance. 😀 I like red khador. red with green on armour and leather. What I meant is that I will copy your painting version on my model with a bit of my influence. and I didn’t knew that Khador had different painting scheme in past.
Cool ! Thanks ! Yes, they had grey… some orange as well if I remember correctly… and even some prussian blue accents (not quite cygnar blue, something a little darker and a little greener). Once, they had a tutorial for making grey/white/blue snowy-urban camouflage sketchy-squares on your Khador warjacks. These days, there are no more official alternate schemes, alas… they leave it to the forums. Tutorials barely offer a slight variation every now and then. And, really, no one has come up with a proper paint-scheme for Cyriss besides silver or brass… Most people don’t even try ! *sigh*… Oh… Read more »
I would like to see that, all main evil robots are greenish gloving – cryx, necrons. it would definitely do much good to refresh them
Always enjoy your videos and particularly like the “subtle Sorscha” colour scheme
– more please!
Thanks everyone for your support ! I must say this one almost didn’t get made… During the tutorial, I decided to try combining wet-on-wet and other techniques on the ice… I had obtained good results with it before, but on something completely different. I’m glad it worked out, but it could have flopped completely ! Retrospectively, it could have been a bad call (although, well, I kind of know what I’m doing, so I could have salvaged it and done a decent job), but it was the last tutorial filmed for the season, we were at the end of a… Read more »
this turned out wonderfully 🙂
really like how the ice casts the blue glow on the white armour 🙂
… kind of gives it an extra feeling of movement I think 🙂
Absolutely captivating and immensely inspiring. All the great comments already posted aside, I particularly like the overall, for want of a better word, “Art” look. The finished miniature, and the process from start to finish, made me think back to certain watercolour techniques from back in the days where I was trying to dabble a bit in that. The miniature seems more alive because of the play of light and colour, the transparency of the paints and the use of complementary colours for the shading, the face in particular. Very fitting with the icy theme, almost as if you thought… Read more »
Aww… You’re sweet ! 🙂
Beautiful! I enjoyed every second of the 3-part-tutorial and I´m looking forward to your next masterpiece.
Watching someone as talented as you are I´m often stuck between “Hey, what an inspiration, grab your basecoated minis and paint them” and “Oh, no matter how hard I try – they will never look like THIS”. 😉
Nah, you can do it easily ! 🙂
Next up, I think you get to watch a tutorial by John.
Needless to say, what you can do on an ‘off’ day surpasses my best work.
Thanks to your help I’m getting better though. I’m impressed by how much your subtle paint scheme ‘pops’, particularly after you painted the black around the base.
Thanks a lot ! If you benefit from my advice, that’s all the encouragement I need… 🙂
Contrast is key ! I don’t like coloured bases or even transparent onesn they’re just hideous… I think black sets things apart just fine and goes with everything. Eye is used to “not seeing” black. As long as it’s properly based and painted, the black just doesn’t shock the eye.
Thank you for another grand tutorial. Its always fun to watch you paint and your “conversation” keeps my interest level high. I’ve painted minis for 35+ years in scales from 6mm to 54mm and am always able to benefit in some way. Thank you again Romain.
The end result looks great. I just wish the camera would capture it better. It’s very hard to see what you are doing to the face exactly. Good you voice-over all your actions.
If a better close-up video cam isn’t an option perhaps a macro photography step-by-step overlaid on the video would do the trick.
This is difficult to do…
I have done a “face” tutorial on a 54mm head, mind you.
Thanks for the kind words !
There is a weird lag problem for me with just your painting videos. I have no problem with any other videos on Beasts of War, and I read in the previous videos comments that another person was having the same problem. We are both using Apple products, and using Safari.
Although I don’t play Warmachine, I really enjoy your tutorials. As the posts asks for what we would like to see: I would like to see an Infinity TAG.
